Illinois Selected as NSF I-Corps Site

We are excited to announce that the University of Illinois has been selected as one of three NSF I-Corps Sites.

This program enables academic institutions to catalyze teams whose technology concepts are likely candidates for commercialization. The make-up of teams at the Sites is modeled after the composition of I-Corps Teams, and education at the Sites shares the principles of the I-Corps Curriculum. I-Corps Sites will provide infrastructure, advice, resources, networking opportunities, training and modest funding to enable groups to transition their work into the marketplace or into becoming I-Corps Team applicants. With the support and mentorship of the Sites, the teams will learn first-hand about entrepreneurship and explore the transition of their ideas, devices, processes or other intellectual activities into the marketplace.

Grants from the NSF I-Corps program have been awarded to Stanford; UC-Berkeley; UC-San Francisco; UC-San Diego; George Washington; University of Maryland; Virginia Tech University; City University of New York; New York University; Columbia University; Georgia Tech; and the University of Michigan.

I-Corps Teamscomposed of academic researchers, student entrepreneurs and business mentors, participate in the I-Corps curriculum administered via online instruction and on-site activities through one of several I-Corps NodesI-Corps Sites, such as the one at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, will catalyze additional groups to explore potential I-Corps Team projects and other entrepreneurial opportunities that build on basic research. Together, the I-Corps programs strengthen the innovation ecosystem at the local and national levels.

According to an article in the online magazine The Atlantic Cities, the Champaign-Urbana metro area ranks in the top 10 when mapping venture capital deals per 100,000 people by metro. San Jose (the Silicon Valley) tops the list with 22.6 venture capital deals per 100,000 people.

"My bottom line: Silicon Valley's lock on high-tech activity is no longer what it once was. San Francisco, along with urban centers in New York and Boston-Cambridge, have upped the ante, and smaller college towns have also shown they can play as well," writes author Richard Florida.

    The top 10 continues with:
    San Francisco, 17.2
    Boulder, Colorado, 13.6
    Boston, 9
    Ann Arbor, 6.4
    Lawrence, Kansas 5.4
    Austin 5.1
Charlottesville, Virginia and Missoula, Montana, 4.6
    Champaign-Urbana, 3.4
    San Diego 3.3
