Anheuser-Busch InBev utilizes Agrible's Morning Farm Report in order to enhance AB InBev's existing SmartBarely Platform, which aims to leverage data, technology and insights. Agrible, an EnterpriseWorks graduate, has been working with AB InBev since 2016. Since then, their relationship has developed beyond the United States into a major international expansion across multiple countries, such as with South Africa, Uruguay, Brazil and Argentina. On the home front, the Agrible and AB InBev Bud Analytics offices are neighbors at the University of Illinois Research Park.

Leaders at AB InBev stress the significance of big data, with Global Director of Ag Innovation Katie Hoard explaining, "We are the biggest user of malted barely, so it was up to us to make sure barely remains sustainable and competitive so farmers will want to continue growing it." Using big data and analytics to measure efficiency allows the company to take a more holistic approach to the farming process, and eventually build a global sustainability view. Paul Miller, Chief Science Officer for Agrible, understands that, "The road to achieving a sustainable global supply chain isn't an easy one, and we want to help address those challenges with technology and teamwork."

Autonomic Materials has raised $3 million during it's third round funding. Autonomic Materials, began as a startup company at EnterpriseWorks in 2007 after being incporated by Professor Dr. Scott White from the University of Illinois in 2005. It graduated in 2012 and moved into a former Syngenta facility  southwest of Champaign. The company specializes in micro-encapsulated self-healing agents for paints and adhesives.

CEO of Autonomic Solutions, Gordan Fischer, says that Solvey, a Belgian chemical company, led the round of funding and will help Autonomic Materials scale up its first product, which is a self-healing paint to be used in industrial facilities. This self-healing paint will help structures made of metal that are prone to corrosion.

Since graduated from EnterpriseWorks, the company has grown to 9 employees including Magnus Andersson and Gerald Wilson. Laura Frerichs, director of the Research Park said, "I applaud the perseverance and persistence of Magnus Andersson...and Gerald Wilson...in working tirelessly as entrepreneurs and scientists bringing their revolutionary product to the market."

Fischer is excited about this new round of funding, and is encouraged that Solvey took an interest in Autonomic Materials.  "That's great for us. It shows that a major company sees some value in us," he said.

EnterpriseWorks startup AE Machines received the Product Design of the Year Award at the inaugural Fourth Revolution Awards this week. The event, held in Chicago and organized by mHUB, IMEC and UI LABS, recognized regional manufacturing for its leadership and innovation.

The Product Design of the Year Award "recognizes a product design that is unique, improves user experience, and impacts productivity as well as the greater good."

Winner: AE Machines empowers small manufacturers to program and reprogram simple automated systems in-house. The program allows users to design their own automated system by building from either the software side or the hardware side of the program.

“We've spent the past two years working with hobbyists and everyday users to figure out how to transition university robotics research into an automation system that anyone can operate and maintain without specialized training; the result of that process is the AE Design Tool. This award will help us achieve our next goal, which is to bring our approach to manufacturers in the region who want flexible automation cells that their existing workforce can maintain,” said Amy LaViers, Co-founder and CTO of AE Machines.

LaViers is an assistant professor of mechanical engineering at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. She and co-founder Eric Minnick have touched various areas of the University of Illinois entrepreneurial ecosytem, including receiving an AWARE Proof of Concept grant; utilizing SBIR technical assistance and entrepreneur-in-residence providers; and launching their company at the EnterpriseWorks technology incubator at Research Park.

Congratulations AE Machines!
