Ryan Nolan, co-founder of PhotoniCare, was featured in The News-Gazette for his work building medical tools, specifically, the ClearView device.  Since 2013, Nolan wanted to develop better imaging devices to improve patient care.  Having small children prone to ear infections has also strengthened Nolan's passion.

The PhotoniCare ClearView device is used in the same way as an otoscope, but uses infrared light to see through the eardrum into the middle ear.  It provides cross-sectional black and white scans of the eardrum so doctors can easily see what is happening behind it. Using PhotoniCare's ClearView imaging device, it is easier to correctly treat ear infections and ear diseases the first time.

Nolan's advice for anyone trying to start a business is to "get out of the office" and "fail fast."  It is important to talk with potential customers and make sure that if something does not appeal to them, the company finds out sooner than later. Also, cold calls and emails work better than one might think.

PhotoniCare's lab, located at EnterpriseWorks at the University of Illinois Research Park, began a study to better improve their imaging device.  They are looking for volunteer subjects, both children and adults, to participate with a $15 gas card for participants.

To enroll, contact Ryan Nolan at 847-852-6264 or rnolan@photonicareinc.com.

Over the course of four years, 120 NSF I-Corps program teams at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign have raised more than $42 million in external funding. These numbers, released by the Technology Entrepreneurship Center, reveal that $11 million has come from SBIR grants, $28 million from venture capitalists or angel investors, and $3 million from other sources.

Through the EnterpriseWorks Incubator at Research Park, startups have access to the vibrant entrepreneurial ecosystem on campus. Current EnterpriseWorks startups such as Photonicare, Petronics, Innsight Technology have been provided with the general understanding of business models, the marketplace, and SBIR funding through participation in I-Corps. Leanne Labriola, President of Innsight Technologies, explains that, ““As the course progressed, we were able to conduct an extensive customer need analysis and explore a product market fit which provided important strategic insights for our product development. The ability to present clear business plans to potential investors has offered a clear advantage for our company and changed our trajectory.”

Brunswick Illini - Joint Explorations in Technology lab

Brunswick is first company to move into the Research Park's new Mixed Use Building at 1904 S. First Street, Champaign

Brunswick Corporation (NYSE: BC) recently celebrated the grand opening of new quarters for what has been known as the Brunswick Innovation Laboratory in the Research Park at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. But with its new building, the lab also now has a new name - the Brunswick I-JET Lab.

Inspired by the students and the staff who work there, the facility's new name incorporates the acronym for Brunswick Illini - Joint Explorations in Technology lab.

The new name fits with the changing times and the Company's evolving business model, explained Brunswick Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Mark Schwabero, who led a contingent of the firm's top executives who attended the event.

"Brunswick will mark its 175th year in business in 2020," Schwabero noted.  "You don't stay in business that long without being innovative, agile and resilient.  Technology and innovation have always been important to us, and never more so than today as we see consumers desiring even more in the way of features and connectivity in both marine and fitness."

"It also is fitting that 'Illini' has a prominent position in our facility's new name," explained Brunswick Chief Technology Officer David Foulkes.  "Obviously, the close ties to the University of Illinois, with its resources, staff and gifted students, are truly unique. These strengths, along with those of other companies within the park, offer an atmosphere conducive to collaboration and learning.

"Further, the 'JET' portion of the name aptly describes the urgency and energy with which those at the Brunswick I-JET Lab approach their duties and responsibilities," Foulkes said.

Foulkes pointed out that research and development is a continuous effort throughout Brunswick to drive innovation.  These efforts have been solidly productive as the Company continues to outpace its competition in the introduction of new products to market as well as securing patents on its technologies and features.  In 2016, Brunswick ranked among the top 25 Illinois-based companies in securing patents.

The Brunswick I-JET Lab works closely with Brunswick corporate and divisional resources to further accelerate Brunswick's progress in areas of high interest, including the Internet of Things, advanced analytics, and a range of human-machine interaction and enhanced user-experience technologies.

More than 100 companies, including industry leaders such as Abbott, John Deere and Yahoo, have facilities within the 200-acre research park, which is adjacent to the university's campus.

"It feels good to have a place to call home," Schwabero concluded.  "Our name is on the building and on the door, but what truly excites us is the work that is being done inside by the talented and dedicated researchers and students."

The newly constructed building is at 1904 South First Street.   Beginning last April, the Brunswick I-JET Lab had occupied temporary quarters. Brunswick is the first company in the Research Park's new growth facility to mark such an event.

    AWARE

AWARE (Advancing Women and UnderRepresented Entrepreneurs) is now on its third year, and with the combined efforts of Research Park and the Technology Entrepreneur Center, has helped fund and connect women through I-Corps, SBIR, and the Cozad New Venture Competition. This program targets support for women and underrepresented groups in an effort to bring them into the vibrant entrepreneurial ecosystem at Illinois.

The ultimate goal of the AWARE program is integration. Laura Bleill, Associate Director of the Research Park, explains that, “Our goal is to very much put some effort and intentionality around funneling people into the existing ecosystem and really affect change in the culture of the ecosystem in a way that we can impact. We did that through a little bit of social engineering, but also a little bit of extra opportunity and resources. We want to understand the impediments, challenges and resistance of some people that are clearly well qualified and have the ability and the interest in moving forward with something entrepreneurial.”

Nina Kshetry, founder of Champaign-based startup Ensaras which received a $100,000 grant from the NSF in 2015, shares that, “The AWARE program and EnterpriseWorks have made me feel part of the local entrepreneurship community, which is important since as an entrepreneur you can often spend a lot of time working solo. The resources and programming through AWARE and EnterpriseWorks have been amazing, and have helped me through the entrepreneurial journey.”

Over the last two years, AWARE participants have successfully applied for I-Corps and SBIR grants. There is still a lot of room to grow, as Laura Bleill states, “We would like to market to specific people we think would be interested, be much more prescriptive of the programming we offer, and have more resources for not only proof-of concept awards, but also for sending people to training or conferences.”
