Syngenta Digital Innovation Lab has a coding problem and only YOU, the talented and CS-savvy, can help. Continue reading to see you have the chops to do what it takes.

  REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. You have full and extensive knowledge of Full Stack. In fact, you and Full Stack are beyond “buddies”. Y’all are so close that you have standing Friday-night plans at Brothers.
  2. Your programming is at a God-level. You need to be at a point that when a computer walks into your house, they ask if they can get you something to drink. If mortals and computers alike do not cower at your intimidating knowledge, your application will go straight into the trash.
  3. You can explain, with accuracy and with visual aids, the differences between Python, Full Stack, CUDA, and HPC. Bonus points if a) you incorporate a Venn Diagram and b) we remain interested throughout the entirety of your presentation.
  4. Can write a four page, cited, MLA-formatted paper on why being Full Stack developer is infinitely better than being any other programmer. Employment will be expedited if you come up with a rap/diss track  to accompany said paper.

OTHER QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. You have a fierce entrepreneurial spirit: we hold an annual “Entrepreneur Hunger Games” and you must be ready to participate. More info to be provided after waiver-signing.
  2. Willing to join in on nerdy discourse and discussion. Also, we are forming a competitive Trivial Pursuit team. Let us know your size! We don’t care if you know trivia or not--this is not optional, and we’re getting  jackets.

  1. Office that is reminiscent of a mullet: all business in the front, but wild party (complete with cappuccino machine and snack bar) in the back. Yes, it WILL be the best workplace model you will ever experience.
  2. Opportunities to challenge coworkers in both ping-pong and bags. Also, huge field connected to a patio in case the competition gets so heated that y’all need to take it outside.
  3. No spiders. No rodents. No little girls from The Ring crawling out of our many computer monitors (amazing what one little office-wide exorcism can do!)
  4. Many corporate visitors that you can engage with and learn from.
  5. Not to brag, but…awesome coworkers. Peers that can help you learn (both in your own field and in areas completely new to you!)

Madelyn Walters started out as one of Granular's first employees when Granular opened up a new regional headquarters in the Research Park, she is now this week's tech difference maker in the Champaign-Urbana area for her work as a Product Manager at Granular, after having worked her way up from Customer Success Manager.

Her passion for agriculture economics started from an early age, as she grew up on a farm in northern Illinois. Now, she is working on software for farmers that provides a centralized place for farmers to store and access information about what happens on their farm to help them make better decisions.

If Walters could give any advice to farmers it would be to know your numbers, be organized, and set and communicate expectations.

For start-up companies, Walters advises managing what you can and don't waste time worrying about what you can't, because a lot can change in two years time.

IST Index

The Illinois Innovation Index, published by the Illinois Science and Technology Coalition, has been researching innovation activity since 2013 in order to determine the standing of technology startup entrepreneurship in Illinois. Among their overall findings of increased active startups, capital raised, and NSF I-Corps participation, the University of Illinois Research Park is mentioned throughout the Index in a diverse variety of areas.

The EnterpriseWorks Incubator, our established entrepreneurial hub, as well as the new Illinois University Incubator, which is the product of a new Illinois grant, work to support startup activity in both Champaign-Urbana and across the state. Research Park is also a member of the I-Corps Midwest Node, a collaboration among Midwest universities that aims to provide additional resources to new entrepreneurs. Keeping with this theme of partnerships, the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and the University of Chicago are also collaborating on a new Hyde Park innovation facility, which would, “develop and commercialize groundbreaking technology.”

Two Research Park EnterpriseWorks startups, Amber Agriculture and OceanComm, are spotlighted in the Index for their successful use of entrepreneurial resources. Both startups won prizes at the Cozad New Venture Competition, as well as participated in the NSF I-Corps program. Amber Agriculture received funding from IllinoisVENTURES, a venture capitalist firm that, “provides proof-of-concept funding as well as seed and venture capital for University of Illinois companies.” OceanComm has gained funding support from SBIR grants.

The Research Park AWARE program is praised for taking on issues of underrepresentation of women and minorities in entrepreneurship. AWARE works directly with these underrepresented entrepreneurs to provide mentorship, entrepreneurs-in-residence, proof-of-concept grants, and events.
