UIRP welcomes Synchrony

Early in April, the University of Illinois welcomed Synchrony to the Research Park. Synchrony Vice-President Ujjval Patel shared with News-Gazette why the Connecticut financial services company came to Champaign-Urbana. Patel, a University of Illinois alum, explains that the community’s impressive talent pool was a huge draw. Our student interns bring an interdisciplinary education with them to the job and this makes all the difference.

With an eye toward using machine vision and machine learning to improve online shopping and credit risk assessment, Patel is optimistic that University of Illinois interns will help Synchrony “build a bridge to the future.”

Revolution Medicines

EnterpriseWorks graduate, Revolution Medicines, tees up for oncology IND for $56M Series B Venture Capital Investment. The capital has been raised from Nextech Invest, The Column Group, and Third Rock. Current CEO, Mark Goldsmith, said, "We appreciate the strong support shown by our founding and new investors in this signifcant financing that will fuel the advancement of our exciting SHP2 program and innovative pipeline."

Revolution Medicines began at the University of Illinois in 2014, founded by Professor Marty Burke. Its purpose was to develop a platform to rapidly open chemical space hereto inaccessible for drug development, while enabling Ph.D. chemist to focus on the utility of molecules rather than the synthesis of the molecules. Essentially, Revolution can attack targets that were previously considered undruggable.

Since 2014, the company has begun to focus on oncology, and the $56M will help put the SHP2 program into the clinic. The SHP2 program focuses on a molecule that blocks SHP2, a protein that regulates cellular proteins, but also acts as a driver of certain cancers and as a signaling node in various regulatory pathways.

Revolution will continue with its discovery and research and expects to test its SHP2 drug as a monotherapy and in combination with other treatments for patients with advanced cancers.

"The raise of new capital, expansion of our executive team and board with seasoned leaders, and multiple presentations about progress in our SHP2 program at the recent AACR conference all reflects enormous momentum in our effort to outsmart cancer," said Goldsmith.

Intelligent machines powered by Artificial Intelligence computers that can learn, reason and interact with people are no longer science fiction. Today, a self-driving car powered by AI can meander through a country road at night and find its way. An AI-powered robot can learn motor skills through trial and error — this is truly an extraordinary time and the era of AI has begun.

Image recognition and speech recognition — GPU Deep Learning has provided the foundation for machines to learn, perceive, reason and solve problems. The GPU started out as the engine for simulating human creativity, conjuring up the amazing virtual worlds of video games and Hollywood films. Now, Nvidia’s GPU runs Deep Learning algorithms, simulating human intelligence, and acts as the brain of computers, robots and self-driving cars that can perceive and understand the world. Just as human imagination and intelligence are linked, computer graphics and AI come together in our architecture. Two modes of the human brain, two modes of the GPU. This may explain why Nvidia GPUs are used broadly for Deep Learning, and Nvidia is increasingly known as “the AI computing company.” Make the choice to join us today.

Our team builds the NVIDIA DriveWorks SDK with the goal to provide a scalable software stack and framework to build autonomous vehicles.

We are seeking software engineers with interests on designing, developing and maintaining many aspects of the core technology such as sensor interfaces, data streaming, threading, memory management and lower level platform specific technology.

  • Performing in-vehicle tests, collecting data and completing autonomous drive missions.
  • Developing unit tests, documentation for features, evaluating quality and proposing corrective actions.
  • Developing highly efficient product code in C++, making use of high algorithmic parallelism offered by GPGPU programming (CUDA). Follow quality and safety standards such as defined by MISRA

What we need to see in you:

  • BS/MS or higher in computer engineering, computer science or related engineering disciplines.
  • Excellent C and C++ programming skills
  • Experience developing and debugging multithreaded/distributed applications like multimedia systems, game engines, etc.
  • Strong knowledge of programming and debugging techniques, especially for parallel and distributed architectures.
  • Strong knowledge on Linux, Android, and/or other real-time operating systems.
  • Thrive on writing low latency, highly performant code
