IllinoisVENTURES, a tenant of EnterpriseWorks, is known for helping make startup dreams come true. As Senior Director Tom Parkinson says in his interview with the News-Gazette, IllinoisVENTURES’ mission is to “support faculty and students who are commercializing new technologies by providing very early-stage investment capital. We're usually one of the first backers to invest in a startup.”

Parkinson of IllinoisVENTURES has only been with the company for 2 years, but IllinoisVENTURES was founded in 2002. Since then the company has invested in more than 85 companies including graduates of EnterpriseWorks such as Tiesta Tea and Cast 21, as well as current tenants Petronics and PhotoniCare.

Parkinson gradually made his way from incubator to incubator until he came to EnterpriseWorks and IllinoisVENTURES. He offers good advice to keep in mind: “The biggest lesson that entrepreneurs and early-stage investors can learn is that customers don't buy technology, they buy solutions to their problems.”

A startup that began as a senior design project has led to innovation and affordable technology. Mesh++ was started by Danny Gardner, a senior at the University of Illinois at the time, to make WiFi more available in places from parks to third world countries with limited resources.

Gardner, the CEO of Mesh++, is a recent graduate from the University of Illinois graduating in 2017. Although this project started off as a solo endeavour, their team has recently grown. And so has their business. They have been solving problems with their original tech, expanding their business, and reaching new heights.

Although Gardner is still young, aged 23, he has a lot of wisdom for his age. When asked about the advice he would give to young startups, he responded, “Take risks. Try everything. You'll fail 99.9 percent of the time and that's fine, everyone does. It's the 0.1 percent of marginal success that you'll slap on your LinkedIn profile and brag about to everyone with ears.” Read the full story on Mesh++ here.

Research Engineer or Senior Research Engineer

Power Optimization of Electro-Thermal Systems (POETS)

College of Engineering

University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign

The National Science Foundation Engineering Research Center for Power Optimization of Electro-Thermal Systems (POETS) is soliciting applications for the position of Research Engineer or Senior Research Engineer focused on prototyping and testing electrified power systems including thermal management. The increase of power density for mobile electrified systems requires extensive sub-system and system level testing of new technologies prior to deploying them commercially. This is a full-time, benefits-eligible academic professional position appointed on a 12-month service basis.  This position will report to the POETS Director and will be located at the POETS test facility, a new space developed in the Research Park at Illinois. The expected start date is as soon as possible following the closing date. Salary is commensurate with experience and qualifications.

POETS’ long-term goal is to increase the power density of current mobile electrified systems by 10-100 times over current state of the art systems. While ambitious, this would have a profound impact on a mobile electrified infrastructure of the U.S. and beyond. On-highway vehicles could save between 100-300 million liters of fuel per year and could nearly double the range of all-electric vehicles. Off-highway vehicles could save approximately 100 billion liters of fuel since their electrification is starting from a less mature point than current on-highway vehicles. Similarly, aircraft could see 10-30 billion liters of fuel saved as well as up to 10 million tons of CO2 saved from going into the high altitude atmosphere. These economic and environmental impacts are just the beginning of the art of the possible with the achievement of the POETS vision. More information about POETS is available at: http://poets-erc.org/

Specific duties and responsibilities include the following, but may vary depending on position level:

  1. Manage and enforce the Lab Safety Program including implementing appropriate lockout/tagout procedures on equipment, ensure safety training among users, control laboratory access based on safety training and compliance, regular documented evaluations of equipment and procedures for safety, preparedness drills, and other tasks as required.

  2. Manage lab equipment inventory including electric motor test stands, drive electronics, instrumentation and data acquisition systems, chiller systems, rotating machinery, power electronics including supplies/meters/scopes.

  3. Take a hands-on approach to procuring materials, equipment, and resources for use in a variety of projects, and to instruct and consult with graduate students, faculty, and research staff across POETS on areas of prototyping and testing.

  4. Work with lab users to develop detailed Test Plans including safety planning for each test being performed, timeline of the tests, coordination of different tests being performed on the same equipment.

  5. Develop new lab equipment and testing procedures as needed including formulating test plans with test facility users, promoting a safe working environment, and ensuring the POETS testbed facility is properly maintained and calibrated.

  6. Prototype high power density sub-systems and systems; including electrical and thermal aspects.

  7. Test high power density sub-systems and systems; including electrical and thermal aspects.

  8. Keep current with state of the art approaches for testing power and thermal systems related to high density electronic systems.

  9. Collaborate with students and faculty in composing technical reports.

  10. Make presentations to sponsors, faculty, staff, etc. on research testing work.

  11. Assist students and researchers as needed.

  12. Assume additional appropriate related research engineer or senior research engineer duties to further the mission of the center.

Petronics Exhibits "Electronic Wizardry" and Wins Big

Success isn’t a cat-and-mouse game for Petronics. The innovative startup’s premier device Mousr won big at the Global Pet Expo 2018 with the Best in Show award for new cat toys.

Mousr combines artificial intelligence with pet playtime by simulating a mouse for cats to chase. It has two modes: manual, where the cat-owner controls the device from their iOS or android device, and auto, when the device allows AI to take the controls. Mousr uses its sensory technology to adapt to any terrain it is put on, alter its speed, and predict what your cat’s next move will be.

David Jun, Michael Friedman, and Dave Cohen founded Petronics in 2014 in the hopes of finding creative solutions for owners to bond with and entertain their pets. They have been at Research Park’s incubator Enterpriseworks since 2015. Mousr, which has already sold out twice, is now on its third round of pre-orders. You can read all about the product on BuiltInChicago or Pet Business, or visit their website.
