    Research Park Global Motion Spinner

The Research Park has a new attraction that will make its debut as this year's Outside at Research Park concert: play equipment.

The Global Spinner looks like its name -- a globe that spins. Kids can climb, rotate, and explore two levels in this fun-filled structure. Many kids can climb and traverse the 14 nets simultaneously. And it's not just for kids - grownups can play on the structure, too.

The spinner will provide hours of fun for those who use it, but it has another purpose: it is a memorial to the late Jessica Weinhold-Brokish and her three young children, Finnegan, Liam, and Amelia, who passed away in a car accident in March. A plaque will be installed at a later date.

Jessica Weinhold-Brokish was a longtime employee of Common Ground Research Networks, which is located in the Research Park. Her surviving husband, Jeff, works at Riverbed, also in the Research Park.

"The Brokishes have been part of the Research Park for many years," said Research Park director Laura Frerichs. "The spinner adds to the family-friendly tech community at the Research Park, and was a way to memorialize our community's tragic loss."

Riverbed, Common Ground Research Networks, and Fox/Atkins Development also participated in helping to bring the project to fruition.

    CEO Mark Goldsmith

EnterpriseWorks incubator graduate, Revolution Medicines, sold the sharing rights to one of their leading drug candidates to Sanofi for $50million.

Revolution Medicines started in the Research Park incubator in 2014 as the company “Midasyn” and have since graduated and relocated to California with their new name. Before moving to California the company launched as Revolution Medicines based on technology created at the University of Illinois.

The medicine that was sold to Sanofi will help fight cancer and inhibit the SHP2, which is an enzyme associated with many common types of cancer. Before being able to create this medicine they first had to create and utilize technology to probe and research the enzyme. This will be the first time Revolution Medicines will be testing a drug on humans.

Augmented reality Technology Growing at AGCO's Acceleration Center

Big companies with small teams in Champaign-Urbana are often at the heart of industry innovation.

In January of 2019, AGCO opened their Acceleration Center in University of Illinois Research Park. Site Director Lena Head (below, cutting the grand opening ribbon) promised that the team would “explore new ways to help farmers build smarter, stronger farms” while the center provided its student interns with “valuable growth opportunity to work on real-life projects with a global agriculture company.” AGCO, a Fortune 500 agriculture company developing farming tools, processes and storage systems, is well positioned to offer just that.

Also speaking to the cutting-edge role of the Acceleration Center, Adam Weiss, a GSI director at the time, stressed that the center was designed to focus on both web development innovation and “big swing” projects. He described the latter as “research on things that in a public company you traditionally wouldn’t spend the time or resources to focus on. Long-term strategic things that may not even pan out.” Thus, the Champaign-based team was built to “take big swings and explore things that we typically wouldn’t.”

Director Lena Head with part of her team

Perhaps the best “big swing” of the office yet is in the realm of mixed-reality technology which may afford industry-insiders a new way to see agriculture. In a February interview to Illinois Farmer Today, then- AGCO Acceleration Center intern Rahul Surti expressed excitement about his work in augmented reality. “We are bringing 3D models of agricultural equipment to life in mixed reality,” he explained. As a Chicago-land native, Surti does not have a farming background but he found the 3D modeling agtech project impressive.

While not ripe yet, the fruit of AGCO’s Acceleration Center has people buzzing. Adam Abels is from Iowa-based Ag Advantage Systems and he sells and installs GSI grain systems. Recently, he demonstrated GSI’s mixed-reality technology for an Iowan farmer, Jeff Divan, who was excited about the possibilities. Through goggles, Divan explored a 3D grain facility augmented over his real surroundings and expressed excitement. If that sounds hard to imagine, think about how Pokémon Go suggests a virtual reality over true surroundings but in 3D. Divan explained that the technology “really allows me to see how our farm’s storage system can expand. And this approach gives me confidence in the design.”

AGCO’s Champaign-based team helped develop the technology in this demo. GSI Director of Global Learning and Development, Lance Brown, pinpoints the utility of such technology for GSI clients: “The customer can actually see the facility and get a sense of the scale, determine if a change is needed, and make that change before any work is done.” AGCO’s team has grown since January. Thanks to many of the factors which make Champaign-Urbana a strong tech and research area, Director Lena Head continues to coordinate her team’s “big swings."

    Description:

Corteva AgriScience TM , Agricultural Division of DowDupontTM is seeking a student intern to join their Data Science and Informatics team. The position is located at University of Illinois Research Park (2021 South First Street, Champaign, IL  61820)

    Project Description

Mathematical and statistical models are routinely used by regulatory agencies to assess the exposure and safety of agricultural chemicals. However, a prohibitively large number of model runs are required to comprehensively study entire agricultural chemical behavior for decision making under diverse conditions, and these numerical runs can take an unexpectedly long CPU time to complete. The goal of the project is to develop a scalable Data Science product for high-throughput application of models used for safety assessment. The intern will evaluate software and hardware architectures (including AWS) for scalable implementation of models and develop a containerized app that is scalable and easily deployable in multiple environments.

    Qualification

The ideal intern will be working towards a MS or PhD in Data Science, Computer Science or related fields. Python and R programming skills are required. Experience with R Shiny, Python Dash, Docker, Kubernets, AWS environment preferred.
