Modeling Center Intern for ADM at Research Park

 

The engineering modeling intern will use engineering skills to create models of industrial chemical and biochemical processes that are of current interest to ADM. These models will predict the behavior of unit operations involved in the production of bio-based chemicals, or other agricultural based products. These unit operations are the ones that any chemical engineer is familiar with and currently used in chemical process industry. The modeling intern will use modeling languages and environments such as Aspen Plus suite, Excel, VB, and the resulting models will be used in process optimization and cost estimation.

 

The intern will preferably be one that has recently obtained his/her Chemical Engineering degree or a similar one. The intern may work forty hours per week or twenty hours per week at the ADM Sustainable Bioenergy Modeling Center, interacting with ADM scientists and engineers located at the Center and other ADM locations. Candidates may also be currently enrolled at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign as a graduate student or have senior standing starting in Fall 2018. Candidates will be enrolled in chemical engineering curriculum or similar.

 

 

Successful completions of a pre-employment drug screen and background check are required.

-Strong working knowledge of chemical rocket propulsion test hardware and instruments including vacuum systems and pressure and temperature measurement.

-Strong working knowledge of electric rocket propulsion test hardware and instruments including vacuum systems, thrust stands, and beam diagnostics (e.g. Faraday cup).

MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

NVIDIA is seeking experienced Senior Distributed System Software Engineers to accelerate Apache Spark and related frameworks for data science.
 
Data scientists spend a considerable amount of time exploring data, iterating over machine learning (ML) experiments. Every hour of compute required to sort through datasets, extract features, fit ML algorithms, hinders the ability of data scientists to drive towards results. Apache Spark is the most popular data processing engine in data centers for data science. It is used for interactive data science, from data preparation, to running ML experiments, and all the way to deployment of ML applications.
 
In this role, you will have the opportunity to collaborate with the open source community to accelerate Apache Spark with GPU for data science. NVIDIA believes that data science workflows can benefit tremendously from being accelerated, to enable data scientists to explore many more and larger datasets to drive towards their business goals, faster, and more reliably.
 
What You'll Be Doing
  • Building a collection of GPU accelerated libraries for ML and data analytics
  • Crafting and implement solutions to enhance Apache Spark for GPU aware scheduling, distributed ML execution and beyond
  • Engaging open source communities, including Apache Spark and RAPIDS, for technical discussion and contribution
  • Working with NVIDIA strategic partners on deploying advanced machine learning and data analytics solutions in public cloud or on-premise clusters
  • Presenting technical solutions in industry conferences and meetups
 
What We Need To See
  • You have a BS, MS, or PhD in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or closely related field
  • 8+ years of work or research experience in software development
  • 4+ years of hands on experience with key open source big-data projects as a contributor or committer including Apache Spark, Apache Hadoop, Apache Flink, Apache Kafka, Apache Storm and Apache Hive
  • Exceptional technical skills in designing and implementing high-quality distributed systems
  • Excellent programming skills in C++, Java, Scala and/or Python
  • Solid knowledge about distributed system scheduler: Kubernetes, Hadoop YARN, Spark standalone, and/or Mesos
  • Able to work successfully with multi-functional teams across organizational boundaries and geographies
  • Highly motivated with strong communication skills
 
Ways To Stand Out From The Crowd
  • Committer-ship at major open source big-data projects (such as Apache Spark, Apache Hadoop, Apache Flink, Apache Kafka) would be a hug plus
  • Working experience with GPU-accelerated libraries (CUDA, cuBLAS, cuSparse, NCCL, nvGraph) is very helpful

Position Requirements

Candidates must be able to demonstrate competency in the following areas.  By demonstrating competency we mean answering detailed design related questions where you have provided problem solutions or strategies, and/or by producing developed code that can be examined.
 

  • Understanding of the LAMP stack and its components

  • Familiar with and have used AWS EC2, S3 and other provisioned elements

  • Object oriented programming in PHP 7 especially arrays and array iterators

  • Database structures in MySQL including concepts such as data import and export with reconciliation, indexing, and access optimizations.

  • Interactive DOM using javascript and AJAX concepts as well as active controls in javascript

  • Responsive design and CSS

  • Communications queuing and error handling for unreliable channels

  • Storyboarding and user story design as a collaboration tool

  • Incremental testing concepts and test framework development

  • Usability and accessibility concepts

  • An understanding of modern security concepts, encryption and key exchange protocols as well as common code design vulnerabilities

 

Candidates are preferred to have participated as a principle developer in two (2) major applications using the above requirements; or as a member developer in five (5) or more major applications equating to three (3) or more years direct design and coding experience.

Candidates are prefered to be familiar with common software development concepts such as Agile development, program and project management concepts, and team programming.

At the University of Illinois Research Park, Brunswick i-jet Lab interns are developing innovative solutions to address the boating industry’s biggest challenges.

Interns at the i-jet Lab are shaping customers’ boating experiences using the latest advancements in technology such as robotics, artificial intelligence, coding, circuit design and generators. Through projects like virtual reality and smart boating, i-jet interns work closely with Brunswick’s corporate and divisional resources to further accelerate applications.
