Description:
Corteva agrisciences TM, Agricultural division of DowDuPontTM is seeking and intern candidate for the following project, ideally starting in winter/spring 2019 (on or about January 14, 2019). This project could cover multiple semesters.

Use of GIS Tools/SWAT Modeling (HAWQS) to Address Chemical Runoff
from Agricultural Watersheds Corteva agrisciencesTM, Agricultural division of DowDuPontTM has historically worked with watersheds through the development of a numerical tool that uses PRZM, SWAT, VFSmod and ArcGIS tools to explore chlorpyrifos runoff from a watershed in Minnesota (Gali et al. 2016). This proposal focuses on the use of the Hydrologic and Water Quality System (HAWQS) tool (developed by the Office of Water at USEPA) for applications specifically designed for agricultural chemicals and traits and to showcase this tool with various pesticides for the Office of Pesticide Programs at USEPA. HAWQS is a web-based interactive water quantity and quality modeling system that uses the Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) as its primary public domain model. HAWQS provides users with interactive web interfaces and maps; pre-loaded input data; outputs that include tables, charts, and raw output data; a user guide, and online development, execution, and storage of a user's modeling projects.

We propose to use and exploit this tool with other models such as the vegetative filter strip model (VFSmod) and possible the USEPA model for pesticide movement (PRZM3). Details include becoming familiar with the HAWQS system and appropriate databases required to simulate pesticide runoff and leaching around the United States and other regions (e.g. EU). In addition, it is anticipated the intern will provide written documentation for the modeling tool developed (users and/or programmers guide), including any connections between the models SWAT, PRZM3, VFSmod and the associated QSWAT and/or ArcGIS needed to create model scenarios.

The intern will work on model deployment, model refinement, and move toward the generation of a manuscript using DowDuPont product(s) such that the methodology and findings can be sanitized and that whatever tools are developed are given to USEPA OPP to address geographical product risk assessment and move away from cruder methods currently being used. It is anticipated this work will showcase how different branches at EPA can work together toward a common goal (e.g., water quality and pesticide registration), and most likely followed by submission for publication in a peer reviewed scientific journal. Experience in using SWAT, GIS, and appropriate data layers required to generate and execute a generic SWAT input file based upon user selection criteria, along with computer programing using Visual Studio or C++, etc. Multiple written documents are anticipated, and thus technical writing skills are required and/or will be developed as an outcome of this project. This will be a project performed by the Stats/Math function of the Data Science and Informatics division of Corteva Agriscience to address runoff projections for regional assessments within the U.S. and throughout the world where watershed and weather input data can be obtained. It is anticipated whatever is developed is given to USEPA OPP for further refinement for all industry participates, including Corteva pesticide products.

Report Highlights Illinois a National Leader in STEM and Computer Science Talent Production

$

The state of Illinois produces STEM and computer science talent in the 2018 Talent Index by the Illinois Science & Technology Coalition (ISTC).

With nearly 25,000 STEM degrees awarded in 2017, Illinois ranked fifth in the nation in STEM degree production with 3,724 degrees in data science fields. Illinois has proven to be a growing hub for data and computer science where jobs have grown at more than twice the national rate over the past five years.

"As the second-largest producer of computer science degrees in the country, retention of these graduates is critical to the growth of the state's economy. Despite the perception that much of Illinois' computer science talent leaves the state, new analysis from LinkedIn shows Chicago is by far the most likely destination for the state's computer science graduates. Since 2013, Illinois' computer science graduates are 4.5 times more likely to work in Chicago than second-placed San Francisco. Champaign-Urbana also ranks as the fourth most likely destination for these graduates."

Research Park company AbbVie ranks as one of the top companies by STEM job postings in Illinois. State Farm, another Research Park partner ranked as a top Illinois-based employer of the state's recent computer science graduates.

The 2018 Talent Index mentions that the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign specifically is "at the leading edge of interdisciplinary computer science education." With the CS x X degree offered at UIUC, students are given a solid foundation in computer science with training in arts and sciences as well. More than 600 UIUC students are part of this rigorous program. The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign has also created a link between students and the Chicago tech scene through the City Scholars program. This program offers undergraduate computer science and engineering students currently studying at UIUC the opportunity to live and work in Chicago while taking online courses. Students create connections and increase likelihood of post-graduation employment in Chicago.

University of Illinois Research Park Director Laura Frerichs is a current ISTC board member.

EnterpriseWorks Graduate CU Aerospace Launches Satellite for Deep Space Missions

$

Category:

The EnterpriseWorks graduate, CU Aerospace, launched their satellite into space for the first time on December 12, 2018. Over a decade in the making, CU Aerospace along with University of Illinois engineering students developed the small CubeSail satellite. At 10PM, this satellite launched from New Zealand, hitching a ride on the Electron rocket from the commercial space company, Rocket Lab. This technology was developed when CU Aerospace lived inside the EnterpriseWorks incubator at the University of Illinois Research Park.

Considered extremely unique in its field, CubeSail has a new technique for steering a "solar sail" with a solar-powered satellite propulsion system. In 2005, David Carroll of CU Aerospace wrote a proposal to NASA to test the CubeSail funding. Soon after in 2008, CU Aerospace won funding and contracted the University of Illinois to develop it.

The CubeSail team watched Rocket Lab's video livestream from a classroom at Talbot Lab. The team then headed to their ground station north of Urbana with hopes to communicate with CubeSail about five hours after it deployed from the rocket. The beginning of the mission was useful for testing the satellite itself, first developed at the University of Illinois Research Park. This was the first space mission for the team and the radio, powersystem, software and electronics were all tested by the team.

If the CubeSail mission is deemed successful, CU Aerospace can commercialize the technology as an alternate propulsion system that can be used for deep space missions. "What's unique about what we do at the university is that everything, all the designs, all the structures, are all put together and designed by our students. We start from scratch," says Michael Lembeck, associate professor in the Department of Aerospace Engineering and director of UI's Laboratory for Advanced Space Systems.

The University of Illinois lab has four other missions lined up in the near future. The next will carry a spectrometer to measure different kinds of chemicals in the upper atmosphere, which will help future spacecraft engineers design better materials for re-entry.

Agrinews Reviews AgTech at the Research Park

Agrinews wrote all about the University of Illinois Research Park in one of their latest articles.

The agriculturally-focused site covered all of the aspects of the Research Park, from the growing number of industries it houses to the increasing workforce of full-time and student employees. They reviewed the park’s history, from its time as farmland to what it is now--a tech hub housing startups and corporate centers that create innovative products every day.

Research Park Associate Director Laura Bleill was quoted with some words about agricultural tech at the park, saying “Corporations are located at the research park because they have access to student talent of kids who have grown up on farms and are familiar with farm tech [...] they are doing projects related to data analytics, mobile app developments or augmented reality.”

The Association of University Research Parks caught wind of the story by Agrinews and also shared it on their platforms. If you want to read about the AURP and see who is included in their network, click here.
