It's not rare for a University of Illinois deep-tech startup to fly under the radar.

One such startup -- founded by a University of Illinois computer science faculty member and a graduate of the EnterpriseWorks incubator --received a bit of notoriety from online tech magazine Chicago Inno.

Runtime Verification is now located in downtown Urbana, and has grown to have 30+ employees. Founded by Grigiore Rosu, uses runtime verification-based techniques to improve the safety, reliability, and correctness of software systems.

"Runtime Verification, based in Urbana, has developed tools to improve the safety and reliability of software systems. Its technology can automatically detect bugs that are lurking in a company’s software, and identify problems before a program crashes.

Runtime’s customers include a handful of high-profile clients—such as Boeing, NASA, Toyota and the National Science Foundation—who use the startup to make sure their code is error free."

"As I look to the future of my specialty of radiology and medicine as a whole, I see that various forms of artificial intelligence will play important roles in the practice of medicine in the future." - Dr. Thomas Kim

Dr. Kim was the focus of the News-Gazette's Wired In Sunday interview column on Jan. 6. The column features the Champaign-Urbana technology community.

Dr. Kim's startup, A2IR (Artificial Intelligence Imaging Research), became a tenant at the EnterpriseWorks incubator in September of 2018. The company  leverages artificial intelligence in interpretations of medical imaging studies. He is a radiologist at Carle in Urbana.

"We are working to develop AI-driven software that will provide preliminary interpretation of selected radiology studies. It will help radiologists with improved workflow and efficiency, allowing them to handle the continually increasing volume of radiology exams and the increased complexity of each exam, especially as we look to the next 30 years in the U.S, with an increasing number of aging patients from the baby boomer generation."
