Personify CEO Interviewed By CBS News Regarding Amazon Smartphone

In the wake of relentless competition in the smartphone industry, Amazon unveils its newest attempt at gaining a share of the market. In an industry with so many current successful players, Amazon has the challenge of bringing something new to the table if it wants even a sliver of the market. Cue Personify CEO, Sanjay Patel, to explain how this new smartphone from the global online shopping giant is putting a new twist in the smartphone world. He cites the low cost way they have enabled four infared sensors to better identify head and eye position for the user as well as developing a quality 3D display without the need for glasses or other technology as the two primary ways Amazon is adding a unique angle to smartphones. CBS was wise in consulting Patel, who is not only a computer engineering professor at the University of Illinois, but also the CEO of Personify, a tech company that recently graduated from the EnterpriseWorks incubator. Patel and his Personify team have developed ways to enhance video communication, ranging from technology that puts live video into a PowerPoint presentation to being in the same virtual space as the person on the other side of the computer. Because of Patel's extensive experience with video and user extraction, he was an imperative asset to add legitimacy to Amazon's newest product. Yahoo’s Advertising & Data Systems team is one of the biggest online data & advertising programs in the world. It allows advertisers to reach the masses through Yahoo and partner networks. We are developing next generation technologies to enrich our advertiser and user experience through complex scalable ad platforms, with ever growing and interesting challenges. We're looking for world-class, fun-loving engineers to join our team in Champaign, Illinois where you will have the opportunity to help develop high speed advertising data solutions from data collection to large scale data manipulation to long term data storage and low-latency retrieval systems.

We are looking for software engineers at various experience levels to analyze requirements; investigate optimal software solutions; architect, design, implement and test those solutions; and support our globally deployed data collection and handling software.

All the engineers at our Champaign location share these characteristics:

  • A solid Computer Science foundation in data structures and algorithms, object oriented programming, and modern software engineering practices from their achievement of obtaining a degree in CS or a similar engineering pursuit.  Some of our engineers have undergraduate degrees while others have graduate degrees, including some with doctorates
  • Excellent debugging and testing skills
  • Excellent knowledge of technology and product trends including knowledge of what is happening in Open Source and in other parts of the software development industry
  • The ability to work with large-scale distributed systems
  • Solid written and verbal communication skills
  • Excellent problem solving, multi-tasking skills
  • Great team-working capabilities in an agile development environment
  • The passion to build great products, work with great people and change the world

While the programming languages we use depend on the specific domain requirements of each assignment, most of our engineers use languages like Java, C++, Perl, Python, and Pig, an SQL-capable scripting language.

At the Champaign site we have open positions on several software development teams including those that do data collection and delivery, back-end data processing, database storage and retrieval, and front-end user interfaces, both web-oriented and programmatic.  The exact set of skills needed for each of these teams differs slightly.  Specifically, in addition to the required characteristics listed above, the ideal candidates for each of our teams would also have the following capabilities…

For the data collection and deliver team

·    The ability to use the Java programming language and the Perl scripting language

·    System performance analysis skills

·    Experience working with networking software such as HTTP, FTP, and TCP

For the back-end/data processing teams

·    The ability to use the Java programming language and the Python scripting language

·    Experience with Hadoop or other Cloud computing or distributed programming environments

·    The ability to work with data sets using standard SQL techniques

For the database team

·    The ability to use the Java programming language and the Perl scripting language

·    Experience with database programming including SQL languages

·    Knowledge of database systems including database maintenance and optimization techniques

For the front-end/user interface team

·    The ability to use modern front-end development languages like JavaScript and HTML5

·    Experience developing web browser interfaces to databases

·    Understanding of Application Programmatic interfaces to databases

If any of these describe you, then we have a career for you at our place.  Come see what we’re doing at Yahoo on the Silicon Prairie, in Champaign, Illinois.

EnterpriseWorks, Zero Percent, Research Park

What happens to leftover food at restaurants by the end of the night? It used to have the same fate as garbage bags full of rotten food, random junk, and that old napkin that was recently found between the couch cushions from last month. Fed up with the wasteful protocols of the food service industry, University of Illinois alumnus (a computer science student at the time), Rajesh Karmani, developed Zero Percent, an all-encompassing platform that safely allows businesses to donate the food that would have otherwise been thrown out to local non-profits and food pantries. The goal of the company is to get the statistic of wasted food in America down to zero percent by providing an outlet for food donations to those who need it most. As Karmani's idea was conceived on campus, so was his company, laying its foundation and initial growth in the EnterpriseWorks incubator. In the fall of 2013, Zero Percent was accepted into Impact Engine's sixteen-week program for companies looking to positively affect society. After that program and with more investment, Zero Percent boasts over two hundred and fifty thousand total meals and is expecting to provide over ten thousand pounds of food each day by 2015. Karmani found the Holy Grail of business, because it is a win-win-win: a win for him, because he founded a successful for-profit company; a win for the companies involved because they can donate and obtain more tax write-offs while marketing a greener initiative; and most importantly, it is a win for society as multitudes of people are fed substantial food each day. Karmani and Zero Percent were featured once again in Crain's Chicago Business. Read the full article here: http://www.chicagobusiness.com/article/20140703/ISSUE01/140629861

After last summer's move to the University of Illinois Research Park, the Illinois Applied Research Institute has experienced substantial growth. The new 5,000 square foot space in the Sony building has enabled them to take steps toward a more integrated engineering design.

Jeff Binder, nuclear engineer and Director of the Applied Research Lab, foresees expansion of laboratory space in the near future that will support light manufacturing and building of prototypes.

The Daily Illini showcased Research Park as the muscles behind Champaign's status of being Illinois'"3rd fastest-growing city." Highlighted in the article is Research Park and its commitment to creating an environment that attracts not only big companies like Yahoo!, State Farm, and John Deere; but also a plethora of startup companies at the EnterpriseWorks Building. Besides strongly stimulating Champaign's economy, the over one hundred companies also are committed to taking advantage of the incredible resources on campus, especially the talent of the students. At any given time, over 400 undergraduate and graduate students are employed by Research Park.

Although the companies capitalize on the students of the premier programs such as engineering and business, students from other majors, ranging from advertising to data management, round out the other needs of the companies. Research Park is proud to have such a strong partnership with the University of Illinois and its vast talent of student resources that positively affects Champaign's economy and pushes the city forward.
