The Illinois Applied Research Institute (ARI) at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) seeks applicants for an Associate Director for Manufacturing Science. The Associate Director for Manufacturing Science will lead a large team of professionals involved in a variety of research and development (R&D) activities in areas of applied science, engineering, and/or computing technology related to advanced manufacturing science. The goal is to establish national leadership within five years. The candidate will be a full-time, benefits-eligible academic professional appointed on a 12-month service basis. The expected start date is 1 January 2015 or as soon as possible. Salary is commensurate with experience and qualifications.
 
The ARI is a rapidly growing research, development and engineering (RD&E) venture on the Urbana-Champaign campus. The Associate Director will assemble and direct a large team of engineers, scientists, computational experts and technicians to attract and execute applied research projects in advanced manufacturing. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to, digital manufacturing methodologies, intelligent machining processes, smart factory applications, and defense systems. Relevant materials systems include ceramics, metals, polymers, and composites and are supported by processes such as manufacturing performance simulations, manufacturing software development and implementation, and advanced design and financing concepts.
 
Duties and Responsibilities
 Provide coordination and leadership in relevant areas of policy, science and engineering for the development and implementation of applied research
 Develop, manage and lead large teams of other manufacturing research professionals — engineers, scientists, programmers, technicians, and others
 Steward, attract and maintain external R&D funding sufficient to support a large team of ARI staff
 Serve as a liaison between ARI research staff and clients; track research activity in relevant areas of national and regional manufacturing policy, science and/or engineering.
 
Minimum Qualifications
 Post-graduate degree and/or 10 more years of experience in a technical field such as applied science, engineering, or computer technology
 Track record of external R&D support; be abreast of technical developments in relevant technical areas, including computing technology as well as appropriate fields of science and engineering, and demonstrated independent research and problem solving while maintaining close interaction with other research groups
 Experience leading and managing large research groups and professionals
 Knowledge of developing and ongoing national manufacturing initiatives such as DoD, NIST programs, National Network for Manufacturing Innovation, etc.
