Description of Duties and Responsibilities :

John Deere is looking for a student to work in a part-time contract position working with Visual Basic and Microsoft Excel.  The ideal candidate will have experience with Visual Basic and Excel and the capacity for investigating and learning new interfaces with and environmental assessment software package.  Utilizing this approach a compiler will be developed to transform product information into the needed format for analysis by this software.

This position will be located in the UIUC Research Park where other engineering students will provide a resource for project information.

Deliverable:

  • Working software for parsing and compiling data, per given framework

Hours and Timeline:

  • Starts immediately, hours are flexible and part time, from 5-20 hours per week for about two months

Desired Qualifications of Appilcants:

Skills (must have)

  • Visual Basic / Excel Experience
  • Ability to work with unfamiliar software package to create desired function

Other skills (nice to have)

  • Mechanical engineering and/or material knowledge

Most Advance Marketing/Business Development: Megan Broom, senior in speech and hearing science, IMO (Intelligent Medical Objects, Inc.)

Megan recommended new processes which will be implemented at the corporate level.

Best Entrepreneurial Leadership in a Startup: Yuyan Hua, graduate student in Materials Science and Engineering, Serionix

“Diligent and aggressive,” in less than three months Yuyan helped Serionix progress on a project that has resulted in a minimal viable product being ready for customer evaluation.

Best Tech Innovation in the Research Park: Josh Eckhardt, senior in Computer Science, Caterpillar

Josh’s technical contribution to a web-based optimization tool is now being applied, and in just one manufacturing facility shows an initial cost reduction of $1 to 2 million.

Most Valuable Graduate Student in the Research Park: Dan Zhou, doctoral student in Food Science and Human Nutrition, Abbott

Dan translated scientific evidence into talking points and other information that can be used to educate policymakers on key Abbott Nutrition health policy issues.

Most Valuable Undergraduate Student in the Research Park: Daniel Loeblich, junior in Chemical Engineering, Dioxide Materials

Daniel’s work has accelerated company efforts to bring its CO2 sensor to market and made other important contributions to patent-pending fabrications.

What It Takes

We need excellent communicators, who thrive on solving problems and working in a team environment.  Ideally you will be at least in junior standing pursuing a BS in Computer Science or BS in Information Systems/Technology; others may qualify.  In addition we require:

  • Must be registered as a full-time student
  • Grad date – December 2014 or later 
  • Cumulative GPA of 2.8 and above 
  • 15 - 20 hours/week during the academic year
  • 35 - 40 hours/week during the summer semester
  • Must be able to commute to the work location on a daily basis
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, and Word

A strong candidate will also have:

 

  • An understanding of applications development environment, database, data management and infrastructure capabilities and constraints
