Caterpillar Celebrates 15-Year Anniversary of Champaign Simulation Center at University of Illinois and Announces Expansion Plans

Company to establish new  data analytics lab in support of innovation strategy

URBANA-CHAMPAIGN , Ill. – As a tribute to years of innovation through collaboration, Caterpillar Inc. marked the 15-year anniversary of its Champaign Simulation Center today, located in Research Park at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. In celebration of the milestone, the company is announcing plans to establish a new data analytics laboratory. The expansion will build upon the existing recruitment efforts with the university to engage future science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) talent through additional research and development opportunities, and is a key component of the company’s innovation strategy.

Caterpillar opened the simulation center on the Urbana-Champaign campus in 1999, working in conjunction with the University of Illinois’ National Center for Supercomputing Applications (NCSA). Since then, the center has not only contributed to Caterpillar’s recruiting efforts, but  also serves as a leading engineering hub for virtual product development, advanced simulation and design solutions. Now, the company looks to the next phase of its research and development efforts on the campus by leveraging the university’s data analytics capabilities and resources.

“Our Champaign Simulation Center has been a crucial component for our product development efforts by bringing in new talent – as evidenced by student teams working with our engineers – and through the use of new technologies to aid in research and development,” said Gwenne Henricks, Chief Technology Officer and Vice President of Product Development and Global Technology at Caterpillar. “Since the facility’s opening, we have been privileged to have more than 350 students involved with the center, either through the Caterpillar Practicum Program or as interns working at the center. We are proud to say that approximately 100 of those former students now work at Caterpillar. With today’s expansion announcement, we hope to inspire future innovators to dig into technology right in their own backyard.”

“Caterpillar’s new data analytics lab will serve to strengthen an already close relationship between the company, the University of Illinois and the Research Park,” said Peter Schiffer, Vice Chancellor for Research at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. “Caterpillar’s innovative approach to its Research Park operation started 15 years ago, when it pioneered the Research Park student employment model – one that has been replicated by many other companies. We are looking forward to more productive years ahead.”

Caterpillar and the university will begin efforts for the data analytics lab expansion later this year. The new lab will foster real world innovation by bringing together university researchers and Caterpillar analytics professionals from engineering, computer science, statistics and economics to work on challenges and opportunities raised by technological and cultural change. This investment aligns with the company’s strategy to exceed customer expectations with outstanding products and solutions.

aaron.saxton@neustar.biz
Description:

Senior Technical Manager and Data Scientist

Every corporation desperately wants to innovate, but few companies are able to put principles of innovation into practice. What makes that process difficult is that innovation involves discovery, which is difficult to manage because it can involve rapid changes in direction, dealing with uncertainty, and throwaway prototypes. Neustar is committed to fostering innovation throughout its company and especially in its Technology Foundry, which is focused on cutting edge research & development. This is your chance to help us develop innovative technologies that can make a huge impact in fraud detection, malicious website detection, reducing the spread of computer viruses, IP geo-location, rapid content delivery, and reducing Distributed Denial-of-Service Attacks.  More specifically, we are looking for a leader who can manage a group of data scientists to innovate world-class technologies.

Our team is passionate about working with big data (data with millions of rows and columns), gets their hands dirty with parallel distributed frameworks such as Amazon’s EC2, Hadoop, Nutch, Spark, Mahout, visualization tools such as Tableau and matplotlib, and Python tools such as Ipython, pandas, scikit-learn.  Our team likes working in a dynamic and fast-paced environment with cutting-edge technologies. They think in terms of the business but plan in terms of rapid prototypes that can be used to evaluate feasibility and demonstrate results to stakeholders.  Their goal is typically to lay the groundwork for production-level software once a prototype is developed and evaluated.  Neustar has enormous data assets from which we would like to derive equally enormous value. Our team’s work usually involves not just fusing multiple data sets, but identifying and evaluating other business opportunities that will enable Neustar to best leverage its data.

We are looking for someone with training or experience in machine learning or visualization to help manage our R&D team in Urbana.

RESPONSIBILITIES

·         Lead the team. As the team is mostly built of PhDs and graduate student interns, a high level of excellence and experience is expected.

·         Do research. Everyone on the team is expected to contribute to the core work, even if their field is not data science.

·         Be a data scientist. But definitions will vary! We’re open to non-traditional definitions, if they make sense.

·         Be the face of Neustar on campus. This means evangelizing our work, arranging collaboration with professors and students, giving presentations, finding new talent, etc.

·         Identify and evaluate important business problems or opportunities and the value their solutions would add.

·         Propose innovative and scalable solutions to those business problems or opportunities.

·         Help our team to rapidly prototype and evaluate those solutions.

·         Support our team to document the technical details and results of your work for internal collaboration and potential publication.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

·         Master’s degree or PhD, enrolled in Master’s degree or PhD program or equivalent experience in machine learning, visualization, computer science, engineering, statistics, mathematics plus innovation management experience.

·         Proficiency in rapid prototyping, especially with Python (experience with Python library scikit-learn a huge bonus).

·         Familiarity with the basics of probability.

·         Ability to write, edit and present difficult technical concepts in simple visual terms to business users.

·         Ability to create a clear plan of action, priorities, objectives, schedule, milestones, and evaluation criteria after analyzing opportunities.

·         Ability to develop algorithms that scale in terms of the number of rows and columns.

·         Ability to work independently in a team environment.

·         Attention to detail.

·         The right candidate is first and foremost a leader who can keep the team engaged at a high level of excellence.

·         Technical proficiency in many/any of the following: Hadoop,YARN, Spark, PIG, Java, C, C++, data visualization, and/or equivalent technologies and languages.

The announcement of Caterpillar's Research Park operation expanding its data analytics capabilities garnered national attention this month, with the story picked up by the Associated Press, Markets Insider, and many industry publications.

Read more about Caterpillar's plans in:

The Daily Illini (Sept. 18)
Research Park Director Laura Frerichs thinks Caterpillar’s addition of a data analytics lab reflects Champaign’s growth as a hub for big data. Earlier this year, a report identified data analytics as an area of potential economic development at the University. “We think that Champaign is a great location for computing, but more specifically, analytics as a growing market opportunity, with many companies seeing the information they have as increasingly valuable in making more data-driven decisions for their business,” Frerichs said.

The News-Gazette (Sept. 10)
The new data analytics center is expected to draw on the talents of UI faculty and students in engineering, computer science, statistics, economics and other disciplines, said Gwenne Henricks, the company's chief technology officer.
