  • A solid Computer Science foundation in data structures and algorithms, object oriented programming, and modern software engineering practices from their achievement of obtaining a degree in CS or a similar engineering pursuit.  Some of our engineers have undergraduate degrees while others have graduate degrees, including some with doctorates
  • Excellent debugging and testing skills
  • Excellent knowledge of technology and product trends including knowledge of what is happening in Open Source and in other parts of the software development industry
  • The ability to work with large-scale distributed systems

While the programming languages we use depend on the specific domain requirements of each assignment, most of our engineers use languages like Java, C++, Perl, Python, and Pig, an SQL-capable scripting language.

At the Champaign site we have open positions on several software development teams including those that do data collection and delivery, back-end data processing, database storage and retrieval, and front-end user interfaces, both web-oriented and programmatic.  The exact set of skills needed for each of these teams differs slightly.  Specifically, in addition to the required characteristics listed above, the ideal candidates for each of our teams would also have the following capabilities…

For the data collection and deliver team

·    The ability to use the Java programming language and the Perl scripting language

·    System performance analysis skills

·    Experience working with networking software such as HTTP, FTP, and TCP

 

For the back-end/data processing teams

·    The ability to use the Java programming language and the Python scripting language

·    Experience with Hadoop or other Cloud computing or distributed programming environments

·    The ability to work with data sets using standard SQL techniques

 

For the database team

·    The ability to use the Java programming language and the Perl scripting language

·    Experience with database programming including SQL languages

·    Knowledge of database systems including database maintenance and optimization techniques

 

For the front-end/user interface team

·    The ability to use modern front-end development languages like JavaScript and HTML5

·    Experience developing web browser interfaces to databases

·    Understanding of Application Programmatic interfaces to databases

After nearly three months of nominations and voting by members of the startups entrepreneurial communities on StartupVoodoo.com, the three finalists for the first annual Startup Voodoo “Most Promising” early-stage startup were unveiled today.

With a four-pronged criteria of being Midwest-based, fewer than two years in operation, less than $150,000 in capital raised, and operating in digital technology, biosciences, or agricultural technology – more than 100 companies were nominated with five companies advancing to round two. More than 1,000 voters then chose the final three early-stage startups who will who come Startup Voodoo on Sept. 25 in St. Louis to pitch in the finals in front of a crowd of more than 500 and an expert panel of judges.



CHAMPAIGN, IL, Sept. 2, 2014 -- EnterpriseWorks incubator startup, Servabo, was recently named a finalist for "Most Promising Startup," as a part of Startup Voodoo's regional conference later this month in St. Louis.

Surpassing almost one hundred other startups, Servabo is currently one of several finalists in the competition. After a popular vote, the top 3 startrups will be invited to compete at the conference and win the grand prize.

About the Team

Yahoo is looking for engineers to join the Yahoo Hadoop team. The team has openings in Champaign IL. We are looking for experienced and motivated software engineers to help build a highly scalable and robust next generation Big Data stack to power Yahoo's data processing needs. The qualified engineer would work on one or more of the following open source projects: Hadoop Core (Common, Mapreduce, YARN, HDFS), Storm, or Spark.

Crain's Recognizes Rithmio for Receiving $650,000 Funding

Research Park startup, Rithmio Inc., has raised $650,000 from investors that include Hyde Park Venture Partners, Illinois Ventures, Techra Investments and Serra Ventures

Rithmio was founded by University of Illinois graduate student, Adam Tilton, about a year ago.  Rithmio has created gesture recognition software that can be integrated with any device to produce accurate and detailed analytics.  In April, Rithmio won U of I’s Cozad Venture Competition.  Rithmio has not lined up any customers yet, but they hope to license the technology to companies that make wearables and fitness trackers.

Rithmio has just announced that they have reached their fundraising goal of $650,000 that will enable them to build and release the first gesture recognition platform.  Rithmio’s software will help brands integrate gesture recognition into wearables and smartphones.

Funding was led by Marcin Kleczynski, CEO of Malwarebytes, with BonaVentura, Fox Ventures, Illinois Ventures, Techra Investments, Hyde Park Venture Partners and Serra Ventures. Rithmio will use the funds to accelerate the development of their current product, expand the team with additional developers and implement marketing plans.

POSITION

SpectroClick seeks a SOFTWARE ENGINEER to

  • complete development of our core spectrometry technology
  • convert our proprietary SpectroBurst™ raw data to fluorescence, reflectance, and absorption spectra
  • prepare back end/web/database software and video to instruct users in how to employ the instruments and to interpret the results
  • supervise student interns responsible for our website and small programming projects

SOFTWARE ENGINEER must be employable in the United States.

REQUIRED SKILLS

  • At least a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science
  • 5+ years experience in scientific or instrumentation programming
  • Course in numerical analysis with a grade of at least B – OR –
  • Original contribution in the peer-reviewed literature indicating significant understanding of and creativity in numerical methods – OR –
  • Examples of numerical/integer programming demonstrating professional achievement at a comparable level.
  • Completed a college level course in Quantitative Chemical Analysis at the college level – OR –
  • A more advanced course in analytical chemistry – OR –
  • Equivalent professional experience.
  • Has written at least one program that runs on a cellular telephone (iOS or Android or Windows CE) that accesses a remote database with secure login.
  • Has written at least one program running in the cloud that exchanges information with cell phones and full scale (laptop, desktop) computers.
  • Ability to work independently and communicate effectively.
  • Desire to work in a start-up environment for a small company.

DESIRED SKILLS:

  • Programs in Embarcadero Delphi XE5 or later. 
  • Second choice for programming language is C++, third choice is Ada, fourth choice is Java.  If none of these is the candidate’s language of choice, a case must be made that the language can be used for heavy numerical calculation and run under Windows, iOS, OS X, and Linux/Android from a single code base.
  • Familiarity with XML and its extension AnIML a plus.
  • Esthetic sense for development of attractive computer/human interfaces.

Position Description

The Part-Time Student Program at the AbbVie Innovation Center, located in the Research Park, is designed to augment AbbVie’s regular staff, and is for students who are able to work in parallel to their school schedule. Major duties include:

  • Developing small programs and components that will be used to solve problems in the R&D area
