What You’ll Do

The Part-Time Student Program is primarily designed to augment the Company's regular full-time staff, and is for students who work in parallel to their school schedule. Major duties include:

  • Working at John Deere's Technology Innovation Center (JDTIC) at the University of Illinois research park to support John Deere's Knowledge and Content Management initiatives
  • Providing Corporate business consulting for knowledge and content management applications such as SharePoint, Enterprise Search and Digital/Media Asset Solutions
  • Performing SharePoint site design/customizations of low to medium complexity
  • Analyzing data and information to build/improve business processes  
  • Acting as a member of various project teams within Enterprise Content Management Services to build business solutions

What It TakesWe need excellent communicators, who thrive on solving problems and working in a team environment.  Ideally you will be at least a junion pursuing a BS in Computer Science or BS in Information Systems/Technology; others may qualify.  In addition we require:

  • Must be registered as a full-time student
  • Grad date – December 2014 or later 
  • Cumulative GPA of 2.8 and above 
  • 15 - 20 hours/week during the academic year
  • 35 - 40 hours/week during the summer semester
  • Must be able to commute to the work location on a daily basis
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, and Word

A strong candidate will also have:

  • An understanding of applications development environment, database, data management and infrastructure capabilities and constraints.
  • Software programming skills necessary to create and maintain web based applications.
  • Ability to analyze, translate and define business requirements into technical solutions. 
  • Prior experience with Content Management tools, such as SharePoint, Enterprise Search, Media Asset Management
  • Prior experience with web design

Job Description: The student internship will be part of the Research Park staff team and will manage the back end of the Research Park web sites in addition to developing WordPress sites for clients. Other IT projects may be assigned as needed.

 This internship is designed to be both educational and practical, by applying theory to real-world applications in a professional setting.  At Research Park students will have the opportunity to drive and take ownership of meaningful projects, have high impact work, own decision-making ability, as well as collaborate and network with high-level executives. Students should have the ability to work independently as well as with other students on group projects.

 Qualifications:

· Must be enrolled as a University of Illinois student

· Computer Science or Computer Engineering student strongly preferred

· WordPress experience required

· Drupal experience strongly preferred

· Demonstrates attention to detail

· Demonstrates ability to work on tight deadlines

· Works well under pressure

· Demonstrates ability to balance and prioritize multiple projects

· Must be customer-service oriented

· Project management and/or consulting experience preferred

· Website design experience preferred

 

Reporting: Position reports to the Director of Research Park and IT Manager.

 Timing: Student is anticipated to work approximately 10-15 hours per week during the academic year, and full-time in the summer (if applicable).

 Compensation: Hourly wage will be $12-14.00 per hour based on experience and will be paid by the University of Illinois.

What You’ll DoThe Part-Time Student Program is primarily designed to augment the Company's regular full-time staff, and is for students who work in parallel to their school schedule. Major duties include:

  • Working at John Deere's Technology Innovation Center (JDTIC) at the University of Illinois research park to support John Deere's information management and analytic initiatives
  • Providing Corporate business consulting for analytic data (including geospatial data), analytics and business intelligence using applications like ArcMap, Tableau, SAS, Statistica and R
  • Performing guided analytics, dashboards and report design/customizations of low to medium complexity
  • Analyzing data and information to build/improve business processes
  • Investigating, researching and managing acquisition of new and meaningful data sources for analytics
  • Acting as a member of various project teams within Global Analytic Services to build business solutions

What It TakesWe need excellent communicators, who thrive on solving problems and working in a team environment.  Ideally you will be pursuing a degree in Computer Science or Statistics; others may qualify.  In addition we require:

  • Must be registered as a full-time student at University of Illinois
  • Grad date – December 2014 or later 
  • Cumulative GPA of 2.8 and above 
  • 15 - 20 hours/week during the academic year
  • 35 - 40 hours/week during the summer semester
  • Must be able to commute to the work location on a daily basis
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, and Word

A strong candidate will also have:

 

  • Understanding of data structures, database and data management.
  • Software programming skills necessary to formulate queries and to create simple applications.
  • Experience with analytic tools such as R, SAS, Statistica, MiniTab or SPSS
  • Experience with visualization tools such as Tableau, Business
  • Experience with database and query tools like MS Access or SQL

Dow AgroSciences, a Dow Chemical Company, has a challenging and exciting opportunity for a GIS & Remote Sensing Analyst Intern.  This position is located in the Dow Innovation Center at UIUC Research Park.  The Information Technology/Data Analysis (ITDA) organization within Dow AgroSciences provides support of research to drive value and accelerate discovery in the R&D organizations throughout Dow AgroSciences.

Candidates for this position are being sought who are in or who have completed a graduate studies program in GIS & Remote Sensing. The candidate may be in graduate school or may have received a related graduate degree. The successful candidate will have advanced skills and abilities in operating ENVI, ERDAS, and Esri ArcGIS and will be proficient in data processing automation. Software programming and application development skills are a plus. The position will involve data processing tasks in support of project needs to provide high accuracy and quality data suitable for data analysis and information extraction. Typical tasks will involve performing necessary corrections of acquired remote sensing data including systematic correction, radiometric correction, and geometric correction of data sets to prepare data for data analysis phases. Knowledge of and capabilities to perform radiometric calibration methods, georeferencing, orthorectification, and image-to-image georeferencing are necessary for this position.

 

In routine work, the position requires that methods of processing employed will be documented, procedures will be followed, and work will be documented and meticulously organized to assure quality data and traceable workflow. The ideal candidate will be highly motivated, capable of following detailed instructions and procedures, enjoy working as a part of a team, work well under deadlines, have good written and verbal communication skills, and be able to manage and budget time effectively.

First University of Illinois I-Corps Site Cohort Starts Aug. 29

The Daily Illini splashed news about the University of Illinois' first NSF I-Corps Site program cohort across its front page on Tuesday, Aug. 27.

The program launches on August 29 with six teams in place, who will meet four times in eight weeks. Research Park director Laura Frerichs described the program as a "bootcamp process" for aspiring entrepreneurs.

Fourth Street Extension Opens Opportunities For Research Park Expansion

Research Park Fourth Street Extension Champaign

The Fourth Street Extension road project opened to traffic on Thursday, Aug. 22, just in time for move-in day at the University of Illinois, extending Fourth Street from St. Mary's Road to Windsor Road. A traffic light at Windsor and Fourth is now operational. 

From the News-Gazette article:

"Research Park Director Laura Frerichs said the new roads will provide access to 30 to 40 years' worth of developable land. The park has had about one new building per year since it opened in 2001. 'We want to continue that progress,' Frerichs said.

The project includes the extension of Hazelwood and Gerty drives to the east to meet the new Fourth Street. Everything should be open by Sept. 6, according to the city of Champaign.

United Way Mobile Application for Young Children Has Roots in Research Park

A team of Parkland College and University of Illinois students, under the mentorship of an EnterpriseWorks startup, have built a new app geared toward local parents of young children under a partnership with the United Way of Champaign County. Their accomplishment was highlighed in a News-Gazette article on Tuesday, Aug. 27. 

The students created the app with the guidance of Shiren Mathai, the founder of Lost Points LLC, and Kerris Lee, who's a partner at the information technology company and a member of the Champaign school board. The team met at EnterpriseWorks throughout the summer. 

The app will help parents learn about and track their children's kindergarten readiness, a focus of the United Way of Champaign County. The app can be downloaded at http://unitedway.lostpointsllc.com.

Rafael Pinterich will serve as the Director of the Bud Lab, and will focus on selecting and implementing experimental projects.  Prior to joining the collaboration with University of Illinois initiative, Rafael served several different roles within AB InBev such as Project Specialist, Regional Finance Manager and People & HR Lead for Latin America North. In his role as director, Rafael will focus on selecting and implementing experimental projects. He will also be working closely with students, guiding their work and providing them with experiences that will complement university knowledge.

Through the Bud Lab, AB InBev will provide students the opportunity to enhance their University of Illinois education with real-life projects addressing key global product challenges. The University of Illinois has a long and distinguished history in data systems, artificial intelligence, systems and networking, architecture and parallel computing, which make a strong partnership for AB InBev to pursue applications in analytics from data-intensive researches to support a data-driven world.
