    The Illinois Applied Research Institute at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign seeks applicants for a Research Engineer to perform a variety of research and development activities in areas of applied science, engineering, and/or computing technology. This full-time, academic professional position requires the ability to carry out externally funded research either independently or collaboratively, as required by a given project.
     
    The ARI is an applied research, development and engineering (RD&E) institute on the Urbana-Champaign campus. The ARI responds to a set of long-standing regional and national needs to compete for and execute applied research and development projects normally considered beyond traditional boundaries of the University of Illinois enterprise; to provide rapid response to technical opportunities and requirements; and to enhance commercial and employment opportunities. These combined requirements drive the distinct contract-driven and deliverables-driven structure and culture of the Institute while leveraging the depth of expertise, capabilities and resources of the campus as a whole.     Job Duties & Responsibilities
    • Perform independent and collaborative research activities in relevant areas of science and engineering
    • Plan, implement and evaluate research projects including identifying and assigning project tasks and developing project timelines
    • Monitor the progress of tasks, estimated budgets and expected deliverables
    • Prepare and analyze project activity reports
    • Design, verify and test software and hardware products
    • Troubleshoot embedded and application software, identify and resolving operational “bugs”
    • Develop supporting documentation including software requirements specification, software behavior specification, software release notice, design verification test plan and report, communication protocol compliance specification, product configuration specification, and user interface specification
    • Manage the transfer of technology process from the creation of lab prototypes to mass production and product release
    • Present research results through reports, technology demonstrations, conference presentations, and the publication of scientific papers, where warranted and desired
    • Perform other duties as assigned
    Minimum Qualifications
    • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science or other related technical field with more than five years of work experience in applied science, electrical engineering or computer technology
    • Demonstrated proficiency with C++, Java, Python or equivalent object-oriented programming language
    • Understanding of algorithmic design and complexity analysis
    • Detailed knowledge of embedded real-time systems and data communications
    • Detailed understanding of database design
    • Strong problem solving and analytical abilities

    • use Unix or Linux systems

    While the programming languages we use depend upon the specific domain requirements of each assignment, most of our engineers use languages such as Java, C++, Perl, Python, and Pig, an SQL-capable scripting language.

    At the Champaign site we have open positions on several software development teams including those that do data collection and delivery, back-end data processing, database storage and retrieval, and front-end user interfaces, both web-oriented and programmatic.  The exact set of skills needed for each of these teams differs slightly.  Specifically, in addition to the required characteristics listed above, the ideal candidates for each of our teams would also have the following capabilities…

    For the data collection and delivery team

    ·    The ability to use the Java programming language and the Perl scripting language

    ·    System performance analysis skills

    ·    Experience working with networking software such as HTTP, FTP, and TCP

    For the back-end/data processing teams

    ·    The ability to use the Java programming language and the Python scripting language

    ·    Experience with Hadoop or other Cloud computing or distributed programming environments

    ·    The ability to work with data sets using standard SQL techniques

    For the database team

    ·    The ability to use the Java programming language and the Perl scripting language

    ·    Experience with database programming including SQL languages

    ·    Knowledge of database systems including database maintenance and optimization techniques

    For the front-end/user interface team

    ·    The ability to use modern front-end development languages like JavaScript and HTML5

    ·    Experience developing web browser interfaces to databases
