State Farm® Celebrates 10 Years at U of I Research Park

Student innovation contributes to State Farm product development

CHAMPAIGN, IL – State Farm® continues to lead the insurance industry with its innovative approach to insurance and meeting the needs of our customers. Today we celebrate the contributions of U of I student interns, faculty and staff, and State Farm researchers who, through their research and development strategies, have helped State Farm better serve our customers. This year marks the 10-year anniversary of the Research and Development Center (RDC), and our continued partnership with the University of Illinois and the City of Champaign.

"State Farm's innovative interdisciplinary student research model has transformative effects - the results of which we celebrate today," said Dr. Peter Schiffer, Vice Chancellor for Research at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. "These experiential learning experiences are a win-win for the company, the students, involved faculty, and the Research Park. The University is proud of this 10-year partnership."

Opening in 2005, the RDC was created to leverage the talents of UIUC students and staff with the needs of the State Farm P&C Actuarial Strategic Resources departments.  Starting out with only 3 full-time staff and 7 interns, the RDC now has 13 employees and 80 interns, the largest in the U of I Research Park. The program was soon expanded to include work with the State Farm Systems Department and has since grown to support efforts with other areas across State Farm.  Since its opening, State Farm has employed nearly 750 interns who have worked on approximately 1,500 research and development projects.

“The RDC offers real-world educational opportunities for the students and faculty who work with us,” Vice President of State Farm Strategic Resources Laurette Stiles said. “Our partnership with the university through the RDC gives State Farm access to efficient, immediate and diverse research resources with the opportunity to foster innovative research in a campus atmosphere.”

State Farm actively recruits on all campuses of the University of Illinois.  As a result of on-campus recruiting efforts, nearly 30 University of Illinois graduates last year and over 200 graduates in the last five years opted for full-time employment at State Farm.  State Farm’s presence at the RDC provides ample opportunities for State Farm to get in front of U of I students in classroom, seminars and social settings.  Students’ work at the Research Center provides them with real world work experience and the opportunity to learn more about State Farm.

RDC has been instrumental in research around State Farm products; including Steer Clear® Mobile app, web-based vehicle telematics; and research around safety aspects of mobile devices and intelligent homes.

The Center for Consumer Feedback (CCF) began operation at the Research Park in 2007.  The CCF’s mission is to collect and process information on consumers’ knowledge, behaviors, perceptions and insights to facilitate strategic decisions at State Farm.

The Research and Development Center (RDC) continues to grow and is excited to announce the addition of a “Maker Space.”  Lead by our Systems partners, and in collaboration with P&C Actuary and Strategic Resources, this space will serve to allow research into areas previously not tapped.  The RDC Maker Space will include 3D printers as well as microcomputers; Arduino Uno and Raspberry Pi.  This space will provide the RDC with capabilities allowing for broader project selection, strengthening the research possibilities within State Farm

John Deere Technology Innovation Center (JDTIC) in the UI Research Park is looking for a Project Management/Scrum-master Intern for the summer of 2015 with possible continuation into the 15/16 academic year.

This summer, JDTIC is launching a significant mobile software development effort with an Internet of Things flavor.  We are looking for someone who can help us keep things on track. You will help lead a team made up of full-time employees and interns in the rapid development of a exciting new mobile application concept to support John Deere's customers.

An ideal candidate will have some experience in an agile software development environment and/or cat herding.  We can help you learn the agile part but cat herding is something you either have or you don't!  We would also like you to have some interest the business side of technology development.  Depending on background, interest and time, you may also play a role in helping us more deeply understand the business case that would be required to make our new concept a financial success.

Obviously, we expect that you know how to use Microsoft Office products and have some basic understanding of the use and operation of mobile technology.  A driver's license is also required although having a car is not.  You must also be a current UIUC student.

If you think you are ready for this kind of challenge, send your resume along with a note telling why this opportunity excites you to Howard Gerwin at gerwinhowardr@johndeere.com.

State Farm RDC

Reprinted with permission of The Pantagraph. Originally published on April 24, 2015.

CHAMPAIGN — State Farm opened its Research and Development Center in Champaign in 2005 not only as a research resource but also as a place to develop and recruit future employees with skills the company needs.

The center has succeeded “beyond our wildest dreams,” Greg Hayward, State Farm assistant vice president and actuary, said this week at a celebration of the center's 10-year partnership with the University of Illinois.

In 10 years in the University of Illinois Research Park, the Research and Development Center has grown from seven student interns and three full-time staff to 80 interns and 13 staff.

In the past decade a total of 750 interns have worked on 1,500 different projects.

Those are “truly impressive numbers,” said Peter Schiffer, U of I vice chancellor of research.

But what he found most impressive is that the interns came from across the campus.

They could be students in mathematics working on rate setting or information technology students and engineers working on hardware and software or even psychology students working on the behavior of distracted drivers.

Interns benefit  from getting "real life experience in addressing business needs" and State Farm benefits from the work at the center on real projects, said Laurette Stiles, vice president of State Farm strategic resources.

State Farm's “Drive Safe and Save” program, which collects mileage and in some cases basic driving characteristics, was among projects in which the center was involved.

Interns range from freshmen to doctoral students.

Art Jackson, State Farm strategic resources manager, said the interns provide a valuable, youthful perspective.

“They open my mind to some things I did not envision before,” said Jackson, who oversees the center.

An example he gave was combining a drone with a camera and a computer tablet to scan for roof damage. It is safer and quicker than sending someone up a ladder to check each roof.

Information from the inspections also can be placed into a mathematical formula to help identify fraudulent behavior, he explained.

The newest part of center is the Maker Space, which has microcomputers and two different types of 3-D printers among its “toys.”

“The Maker Space is basically a small lab,” Jackson said.

Chad Turner, a State Farm systems supervisor, said the printers can use two different types of plastic, one of which is corn-based, and can use more than one color at the same time.

Their use includes making mock-ups of devices for use in presentations, he explained. The microcomputers can help develop such things as car-crash detection systems, he said.

State Farm's Center for Consumer Feedback and the Modeling Analytic Graduate Network also are based in the Research and Development Center.

“The demand for people with these skills far outpaces the supply,” said Bill Messner, who leads MAGNet. That's why recruitment is a big part of the program, along with skill development and coaching, he said.

RDC serves, in some ways, as a farm team for State Farm, where players — in this case, interns — hone their talents. Last year, 26 interns were hired for full-time positions with State Farm.

Stiles said, “My hope is this partnership … is something we sustain far into the future.”

Hayward noted, “The world is changing fast and we're going to need research more than ever.”

The research park is a public-private partnership whose first building opened in 2001. In addition to State Farm, major firms with facilities in the park include ADM, Caterpillar, John Deere and Yahoo. There are also smaller businesses, young tech companies in the business incubator and some university facilities.

The park's director, Laura Frerichs, said it has become a model in the way it brings together “a cross-section of minds from many different disciplines.”

Schiffer said, “The partnership with State Farm is one of our strongest, most strategic and most treasured.”

Stiles said, “Our presence here on campus and our commitment to higher education overall is part of the State Farm pledge to be a good neighbor.”

By the numbers

7 — Student interns in the first group hired at State Farm's Research and Development Center.

80 — Student interns now at State Farm's RDC.

750 — Student interns that worked at the center during its 10 years of existence.

1,500 — Projects worked on by RDC interns in the last decade.

2,000 — Square feet occupied by center when it opened.

20,000 — Square feet currently occupied.
