The Illinois Applied Research Institute (ARI) at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) seeks applicants for a Senior Software Engineer position. The Senior Software Engineer will focus on the design and development of visualization, user interface design and information design. Primary topic areas include, but are not limited to, personalized medical and clinical decision-making. The candidate will be a full-time, benefits-eligible academic professional appointed on a 12-month service basis. The expected start date is as soon as possible following the closing date. Salary is commensurate with experience and qualifications.
The ARI is a rapidly growing research, development and engineering (RD&E) venture on the Urbana-Champaign campus. The ARI responds to a set of long-standing regional and national needs to compete for and execute applied research and development projects normally considered beyond traditional boundaries of the University of Illinois enterprise; to provide rapid response to technical opportunities and requirements; and to enhance commercial and employment opportunities. Duties and Responsibilities
· Develop new visual metaphors and interactive processes, coupled with machine learning approaches, to effectively understand complex data and analytical methods
· Develop and apply techniques and approaches in information design which support multiple levels of communication and decision-making, such as between peer experts, multi-disciplinary partners, and between expert and novice
· Enlist rapid prototyping methodologies and develop high fidelity comps and specifications to support the entire UI/UX development and implementation process
· Communicate with analysts, researchers, and novice users to identify and assist in resolving the primary challenges they face in understanding their data
· Collaborate with experts in computer science and mathematics to understand analytical approaches and how results could be represented or explored
· Lead the design effort and test innovative visual/interactive concepts for portraying appropriate data
· Work closely with programmers to refine and implement software solutions
· Plan, schedule and manage tasks for the UI/UX development process
· Participate in the writing and editing of quick-start guides and grant proposals
· Lead the design effort for various presentation materials and infographics as needed
· Mentor design students as needed
· Perform other duties as assigned
Minimum Qualifications
· Bachelor’s degree in Graphic Design, Industrial Design or related field
· 10+ years of professional work experience in the following key areas:
o Data Representation Design, Information Design and User Interface/Experience Design
o Developing high fidelity comps and specifications for UI/UX
o Eliciting requirements needed for UI/UX development
o Working in a collaborative software development environment
· 5+ years of professional work experience in developing commercial quality software
· Experience writing requirements and functional definition documents, scope management, and quality assurance of the UI/UX implementation process
· Extensive knowledge of visual communications and human-computer interaction
· Demonstrated ability to understand complex problems and develop novel solutions
· Produce a portfolio of prior work that demonstrates quality design skills and the ability to apply aesthetic and visual design strategies to problems of data presentation and UI/UX design
· Proven ability to organize short-term tasks, plan long-term goals and work well on a team
· Demonstrated quality writing and editing skills
· Extensive skills in using Adobe Photoshop or Illustrator
Preferred Qualifications
· 15+ years of professional work experience in the following key areas:
o Data Representation Design, Information Design and User Interface/Experience Design
o Developing high fidelity comps and specifications for UI/UX
o Eliciting requirements needed for UI/UX development
o Working in a collaborative software development environment
· Experience with Muse, Dreamweaver, After Effects, or Captivate
· Experience with InVision or other rapid prototyping apps
· Familiarity using CSS and HTML
· Familiarity designing for PowerPoint, Keynote, Google Present
