The performance space and seating area are located just south of the Atkins Building at the corner of First Street and St. Mary’s Road in Champaign. Since its inception in 2007, thousands of people have attended OUTSIDE at the Research Park to experience great music and fresh food, all in an open, relaxed and green environment. In keeping with tradition, 2015's OUTSIDE at the Research Park will highlight Research Park's committment to green businesses and the Champaign-Urbana community.

The July 17 event will also feature a green fair, and will offer free exhibit space to sustainability-minded local businesses and organizations to share information about their green efforts. Interested parties can contact Lisa Lillig at 217.244.6298 or lillig@illinois.edu for more information.

Performances:

Friday, June 12, FREE
Tara Terra at 6:30pm
Della Mae at 7:30pm
The night will start right with local artists Tara Terra who will usher in OUTSIDE with an upbeat and smooth pop-rock vibe, sprinkled with a bit of folk and jazz. As sunset approaches, Della Mae will take the stage. This dynamic, multi-faceted all-female force garnered a 2013 Grammy nod for the breakthrough album This World Oft Can Be. With an approach to traditional bluegrass that’s at once sensitive and assertive, firmly steeped in the past yet vibrantly original, Della Mae and their expansive musical vision have gained a place alongside such roots-conscious young acts as the Avett Brothers, Punch Brothers, the Lumineers, and Hurray for the Riff Raff.

Friday, July 17, FREE
Green Fair starts at 6pm
James Jones Trio at 6:30pm
Kilborn Alley Blues Band with special guests Corey Dennison and Gerry Hundt at 7:30pm
The second installment of the OUTSIDE series is a great precursor to ELLNORA | The Guitar Festival (coming September 10-12, 2015) and starts with the James Jones Trio, who will kick off the night with their refreshing take on traditional blues. Then, Kilborn Alley Blues Band tears into the stage with a mixture of gritty Chicago blues and southern-fried soul. The CU-rooted Kilborn Alley Blues Band “is a sophisticated, R&B-soaked throwback to 1950s Chicago. While their music is vintage, their attitude is defiantly current” (Living Blues).

  • These concerts will be held just southwest of Assembly Hall on First Street in the Research Park. Free parking is available in the lot south of the Caterpillar Building at 1901 South First Street.

Ameren

From the College of Electrical and Computer Engineering. Originally published 5/27/2015.

Ameren Corporation recently finished moving into its new Innovation Center at the Research Park at the University of Illinois.

Alumnus Owen Doyle (BSEE ’02) is heading the new space, where he will coordinate Ameren research projects with interns from the University of Illinois.

“We’re at a really important time in the electric utility industry, as we start transitioning to smart grid technologies,” Doyle said. “A lot of the research we’ll be doing will focus on data analytics, and gathering as much information about the grid as possible, then analyzing that information to improve reliability, grid security, and customer satisfaction.”

The Innovation Center will hire 10 to 12 interns for each semester, and hopes that the center will function at least in part as a way for highly successful interns to have a future at Ameren.

“That’s one of the great benefits being here - we can create a pipeline to future employment at Ameren if the intern is a great fit,” Doyle said. “We have a portion of our workforce that’s going to be retiring soon, and we will need to find a way to transfer their knowledge base to the next generation of employees. This is the perfect way to bring new people in and show them the ropes.”

Doyle noted that the interns are coming in at a transformative moment in the power industry: the grid itself is changing, and the needs and skills required of its engineers are changing as well.

“It’s important to improve and modernize the grid and that requires technical expertise and for us to embrace innovation,” Doyle said. “A great upshot of this new center is getting new ideas into what’s been a historically slow-changing field.”

The News-Gazette profiles EnterpriseWorks' newest tenant, Quicket Solutions. Quicket has developed a system that simplifies writing tickets for police officers and transmits the information to court systems, the Illinois secretary of state's office and other government agencies. Quicket was founded by a University of Illinois alumni Christiaan Burner, who developed the system during his tenure at the University.

Wrote the News-Gazette: "The Quicket system digitizes tickets, replacing paper-based citations with a mobile application that allows officers to write tickets digitally and print out a copy for the motorist. The system makes it easier to write tickets for multiple offenses, since repeated information can be copied — and does not have to be entered manually a second time. Quicket also eliminates the problem of legibility. Sometimes cases have to be thrown out because an officer's writing is indecipherable."

Quicket has eight full-time employees and five paid interns, and Burner plans to expand his company into Chicago in the future.

"We think this thing can grow very fast," Burner told the News-Gazette.
