The Job:

The Dow AgroSciences R&D Computational Biology Group seeks a student to work part-time in our office at the University of Illinois Research Park.  The successful candidate will work on data analysis and software development projects that focus on interactive visualization of complex high-dimensional data. The position will provide the student with an opportunity to apply their programming skills to the exciting areas of bioinformatics, genomics, and proteomics.  The student will gain exposure to and understanding of complex data sets and learn to summarize and visualize complex data for effective communication to scientists.

Prior experience in bioinformatics/genomics/proteomics is not required. Key responsibilities include:

·       Understand the visualization requirements for genomic and proteomic data.

·       Independently select appropriate visualization methods.

·       Develop interactive tools to visualize key scientific data types.

·       Ensure that the visualization techniques and software can scale to larger data sets.

·       Document the techniques used and the packages developed.

While the programming languages we use depend upon the specific domain requirements of each assignment, most of our engineers use languages such as Java, C++, Perl, Python, and Pig, an SQL-capable scripting language.

CHAMPAIGN – Lucas Frye, CEO of Amber Agriculture, was spotlighted by the News Gazette as a ‘high tech difference maker.’ Amber Agriculture, a company that helps farmers better manage their crops post-harvest, is the winner of the 2016 Cozad New Venture Challenge.

The idea for Amber Agriculture developed after Frye attended 54-hour Start-Up and realized that a wireless sensor for an application to test if clothes are dry could potentially be used to detect grain conditions.

Quicket Solutions Develops Faster Ticket Technology

CHAMPAIGN -- Quicket Solutions, an EnterpriseWorks tenant, has created a new technology to improve ticket writing for police officers. Instead of writing tickets by hand, a process that may take an unideal amount of time, tickets can now be written and transmitted digitally. This development decreases the amount of time spent writing a ticket, thus decreasing the time an officer spends standing on the side of the road risking his/her life. 

After selling the application to counties in Illinois but hopes to bring it to Champaign County in the near future.

The Illinois Applied Research Institute (ARI) is an applied research, development and engineering (RD&E) institute of the University of Illinois. The Illinois Applied Research Institute (ARI) at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign seeks applicants for a Senior Network Management and Design Engineer to help in the design of a network management infrastructure for the Large Synoptic Survey Telescope (LSST) project. When fully operational, the Large Synoptic Survey Telescope (currently under construction in Chile,) will collect 15 Terabytes of raw image data every night. As part of the LSST Data Management team, the National Center for Supercomputing Applications (NCSA) will be responsible for processing this data in near-real time, producing alert notifications of new and unexpected astronomical events, and reprocessing this data annually to create a 200 petabyte archive by the end of the 10-year mission.

The main purpose of this role is to deliver systems and capability to help continually drive performance and improve operational excellence within network operations. This role will be primarily focused on deploying network management systems (NMS) to aid in faster problem resolution and event correlation and status monitoring. Further, this role is responsible for the ongoing support and customization of service monitoring managers and underlying network management systems that drive the network. The underlying hardware, cloud based services and applications form the ecosystem to enable LSST scientists and the general public to carryout seamless collaboration around the globe. This is a full-time, academic professional position that requires the ability to carry the various tasks independently and/or collaboratively. Flexible work arrangements possible for well-qualified candidates.

Roles and Responsibilities:

·      Develop, maintain, and enhance monitoring and reporting tools, techniques, procedures in support of Network Operations Center (NOC)

·      Develop creative solutions to aid in the quick identification and resolution of problems and customer affecting issues

·      Develop trending and reporting toolset that can be leveraged by other teams

·      Provide Software Development Lifecycle thought leadership in the design, configuration, deployment of network monitoring tools

·      Develop and implement a governance framework around change management, feature delivery and enhancements

·      Update NMSs configurations with product upgrades and patches

·      Develop standard operating procedures for NMS tools

·      Design test programs for NMS implementations to measure/gauge effectiveness and utility

·      Prepare/develop automated processes for discovery tasks

·      Design “role-based” network monitoring dashboards

·      Customize NMSs to meet unique operational and monitoring requirements

·      Assume additional appropriate related network and design duties to further the mission of the institute 

Minimum Qualifications:

·      Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science or other related technical field with more than seven years of work experience in network design, implementation and support

·      Demonstrate expert level proficiency in Network Management Systems, and Applications & Process monitoring

·      Experience with vendor element management systems, MIB design and development  

·      Network analysis and management experience using TCP/IP, SNMP, NTP, DNS, SSH, etc.

·      Experience with IP internetworking

·      Detailed design knowledge in distributed databases and database design

·      Demonstrated proficiency in programming with C++, Java, Python or equivalent object-oriented programming languages

·      Strong problem solving and analytical abilities

·      High sense of ownership, self-motivation and a desire to explore new technologies with a hands-on attitude

·      Strong verbal and written communication skills and an ability to work in a fast paced team environment

Preferred Qualifications:

·      Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science or other related technical field with more than five years of relevant work experience in the areas of network design and management

·      Knowledge of telecommunications field and service provider environments/services useful.

·      Experienced with one or more of the following NMS products:

o   OpenNMS, Nagios, EM7, Netcool, Smarts, Client, Mooqsoft

·      Strong knowledge of internet based network connectivity principles and implementation

·      Experience working with highly complex networks and remotely deployed systems

·      Understanding of network security methodologies and tools

·      Familiarity with network routers, preferably Juniper and Cisco
