The Research Park is excited to announce that registration is open for the third annual Mobile Development Day, to take place on January 31, 2014 at the iHotel and Conference Center in Champaign. With an expected attendance of over 200 participants and 25 speakers, Mobile Development Day provides an opportunity for attendees to share information and network with peers about mobile development taking place in the entrepreneurial, corporate, and educational milieus in the University of Illinois, the Champaign-Urbana region, and beyond.
Topics include, but are not limited to: mobile technical development; mobile design; mobile entrepreneurship; coroporate, academic, or community mobile development; business of mobile app development; Android vs. iOS; mobile development education and careers; apps vs. websites.

Position Summary
Abbott Diagnostics (ADD) is seeking a student to support Operations Strategy to conduct research on key competitors in the in-vitro diagnostics (IVD) industry such that ADD can understand their operational profile and strategies. While specific deliverables will be defined, areas of research and deduction will focus on manufacturing, Emerging Markets strategy, and more.
Additional details include:
- Part-time, paid position at the UIUC Research Park office
- Salary commensurate with experience
- 10-20 hours/week (exceptions made on a case-by-case basis)

Primary Responsibilities
- Gain rapid understanding of IVD market, Abbott, and key competitors through review of previous findings and independent research
- Conduct specific and ad-hoc research as assigned by Operations Strategy
- Communicate findings and progress to Principal Investigator on a regular basis
- Present findings to Operations Strategy via videoconference or site visit towards end of assignment
Qualifications
- Must be a current UIUC student
- MS in a business-related discipline; engineering or science background preferred, but not required
- Experience in independent research preferred
- Ability to read and synthesize large amounts of technical information
- Good technical writing skills are critical
- Excellent verbal/written English language skills
- Knowledge in the use of Microsoft Excel, Power Point, and Word
- Able to work independently and respond well to feedback
- Self-motivated, reliable, and able to meet deadlines

Serra Capital II Fund Featured in News-Gazette Business
Serra Ventures, along with over a dozen emerging startup companies in the Research Park and in Champaign-Urbana, was featured in last week's Business section of the News-Gazette. Don Dodson covered the progress of Serra Ventures' Serra Capital II fund, which is aimed to have $25-30 million in capital and is expected to close this month. Several of the companies funded by Serra Ventures were also highlighted, including startups located in the EnterpriseWorks incubator and beyond.
President and CEO Tim Hoerr mentions five of the companies funded by Serra Capital I that are nearest commercialization, two of which began in the UI Research Park: ANDalyze Inc. and Personify. Hoerr proudly expounded on the relationship between Serra Ventures and its local roots, saying, "The majority of companies [in our portfolio] are based in Champaign or have a tie to the University of Illinois, and that will continue to be our emphasis going forward.[...]We enjoy playing a catalytic role in local economic development."

Intern - GIS and Remote Sensing Analyst
Dow AgroSciences, a Dow Chemical Company, has a challenging and exciting opportunity for a GIS & Remote Sensing Analyst Intern. This position is located in the Dow Innovation Center at UIUC Research Park. The Information Technology/Data Analysis (ITDA) organization within Dow AgroSciences provides support of research to drive value and accelerate discovery in the R&D organizations throughout Dow AgroSciences.
Candidates for this position are being sought who are in or who have completed a graduate studies program in GIS & Remote Sensing. The candidate may be in graduate school or may have received a related graduate degree. The successful candidate will have advanced skills and abilities in operating ENVI, ERDAS, and Esri ArcGIS and will be proficient in data processing automation. Software programming and application development skills are a plus. The position will involve data processing tasks in support of project needs to provide high accuracy and quality data suitable for data analysis and information extraction. Typical tasks will involve performing necessary corrections of acquired remote sensing data including systematic correction, radiometric correction, and geometric correction of data sets to prepare data for data analysis phases. Knowledge of and capabilities to perform radiometric calibration methods, georeferencing, orthorectification, and image-to-image georeferencing are necessary for this position.
In routine work, the position requires that methods of processing employed will be documented, procedures will be followed, and work will be documented and meticulously organized to assure quality data and traceable workflow. The ideal candidate will be highly motivated, capable of following detailed instructions and procedures, enjoy working as a part of a team, work well under deadlines, have good written and verbal communication skills, and be able to manage and budget time effectively.

The John Deere Technology Innovation Center, located at the Research Park on the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign campus, is seeking an algorithm scientist/engineer to join our team. This role will consist finding opportunities to convert business problems to mathematics and algorithms. The focus will be on increasing agricultural productivity and finding innovation solutions for our customers.

· Able to program, preferably in different programming languages such as Python, R, Mathematica, MATLAB, and SQL.

Assistant Engineer (Part-time for 6 mos.)
Cbana Labs, Inc. is seeking a highly motivated and skilled part-time engineer to specialize in testing the company’s micro-electro-mechanical systems (MEMS) chips to join our team. This exciting position offers competitive pay and a challenging work environment. The ability to work in a self-directed manner to set up experiments to measure output and performance of the Cbana’s micro-Gas Chromatograph (micro-GC) components and systems is essential. Other key attributes of this position include:

Research Park Offers Android Programming Course

Want to develop Android-based mobile applications? The Research Park's 8-week, non-credit course may be right for you. This introductory class will provide students with the skills required to develop Android-based mobile applications. The class will include an instructor-led, hands-on introduction to the Android development environment including the creation of simple but functional Android mobile applications. The topics covered include development tools, user interface creation and implementation, design patterns, persistent storage, database integration and information retrieval using webservices.
The instructor is William Seemann, a Software Engineer for Administrative Information Technology Services (AITS). William has several years of Android development experience and actively maintains a handful of open source Android applications and libraries. He recently developed the Android version of UI Dining, the first official University of Illinois mobile dining application.
It is recommended that students have experience with Java and object oriented programming. This course DOES NOT require additional purchases such as an Android device or developer license.
