The Applied Research Institute (ARI), launched in late 2013, connects research across campus, engages with industry and federal clients to understand their needs, and bridges research and development gaps to bring research applications to market faster. With plans to expand across the state, the ARI is currently focused on the following technical thrust areas: Data Science, Materials and Manufacturing, and Engineering System Design and Simulation.
The ARI is comprised of approximately 40 staff members and has provided over 30 internship opportunities to students. With more than 30 partnerships, the ARI works closely with federal and state agencies, national labs, industry and foundations to accelerate technology transition. The ARI is based in the University of Illinois Research Park, Champaign-Urbana's technology and scientific business center. More information about ARI can be found at

The Indoor Climate and Research Training (ICRT) is part of ARI, focused on operating a training center for weatherization contractors, assessors and develops training curricula for the national home performance industry. ICRT also performs research into issues related to residential energy and indoor air quality.
ICRT is seeking applicants for Training Specialists who will provide Illinois Home Weatherization Assistance Program and energy-related instruction in both the classroom and the field. The candidate will be a full-time, benefits-eligible academic professional appointed on a 12-month service basis. The expected start date is January 17, 2017. Salary is commensurate with experience and qualifications.
Duties and responsibilities of the position include:
Provide instruction to weatherization students in the classroom and in the field using innovative, effective, and measurable methodologies, and instruct agency and the Office of Energy Assistance (OEA) staff in field settings using specialized diagnostic equipment. This equipment can weigh up to 50 pounds and must be lifted and carried.
Assist with curriculum development based on ICRT needs including developing, revising and evaluating ICRT curriculum materials/training modules/exercises including exploring new training methodologies to incorporate into existing instructions program.
Engage students in problem solving and critical thinking to make subject matter meaningful, responding appropriately to evaluations and feedback for improvement purposes.
Employ subject matter expertise to present instructional content in an effective and articulate manner while recognizing and responding in a flexible and professional approach to the needs expressed by students.
Use and further develop practical weatherization and energy-related knowledge and skills for instructional use.
Gain and maintain certifications for use as an instructor and proctor.
Proctor online and field certification tests.
Attend and present at practitioner conferences.
Assume additional appropriate instruction related duties as assigned to further the mission of the institute.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS & QUALIFICATIONS (Education, Experience, Training, Knowledge)
Bachelor's degree with a major or minor in building sciences, e.g. engineering, construction management, building construction, etc.
Three or more years of professional experience in the building trades, building performance, or energy-related field.
Experience delivering presentations, training, or instruction to others.
Experience working as part of a team.
Practical and relevant knowledge and skills in the building trades, building performance, or energy-related field.
Critical thinking skills.
Ability to communicate effectively with supervisors, students, and peers; strong interpersonal skills.
Knowledge of the structure and content of the English language including the meaning and spelling of words, rules of composition, and grammar.
Must possess the ability to:
o Recognize unrealistic diagnostic test results and follow-up appropriately.
o Clearly and accurately relay information in a manner which is appropriate to the audience.
o Train others.
o Build positive and effective relationships with a variety of individuals.
o Employ practical and relevant techniques to solve unique problems, especially in the field.
o Lift and carry up to 50 pounds, and work in small and uncomfortable places such as attics and crawlspaces.
o Learn quickly, self-start and self-manage.
