We are looking for Software Engineers to join the technical staff in our Platform Distributed Systems team. The engineers will contribute to our efforts in designing and implementing the critical distributed systems infrastructure that supports our ad delivery system. If you’re passionate about application performance, distributed systems, networking, and huge volumes of data and are interested in joining a world class engineering team you might well be the person we’re looking for. Qualified individuals will have a solid background in the fundamentals of computer science, and some background in distributed computing, high availability, large scale data processing, and performance monitoring and tuning.

Because we are a small team, your ability to communicate technical ideas effectively, in oral and written forms, and solve complex problems in a team environment will also be considered.

Responsibilities

  • Build distributed systems – work on improving and adding new functionality to Turn’s distributed systems backbone.
  • Scale the ad network – work on tuning and optimizing the delivery of ads in a network with thousands concurrent events, unique data scalability challenges and advanced ad selection techniques
  • Keep it running – help troubleshoot application operational issues.
  • Learn and grow – learn from local experts and expand your skills and responsibilities
  • Design and implement features evolving our online advertising and data management product offerings.
  • Develop instrumentation/profiling tools and systems.

Qualifications

  • Must be hard working, team oriented, bright, creative, cooperative, and an exceptional problem solver. And nice. We only have nice people.
  • Must be able to quickly understand technical and business requirements and be able to translate into technical implementation
  • Experience with Java, C++ or C# is a must.
  • 0-3+ years of relevant experience
  • A degree in Computer Science (preferred) or Electrical Engineering (BS) is a must.
  • Some experience with distributed systems, advanced applications building, large scale data processing or application partitioning is a must for senior positions. Relevant classes and projects is a must for junior positions.
  • Solid understanding and working knowledge of modern operating systems, networking, and/or scalability techniques.
  • Proven skills in scalability analysis and performance monitoring and measuring techniques are a must for senior positions.
  • Experience with Linux based operating systems is a plus.

We are looking for brilliant and talented software engineers to join our Applications team, responsible for all of the client-facing components at Turn. You should be motivated by building high performance, web-based, enterprise applications that are used to manage hundreds of millions of dollars in digital marketing spend around the globe.

EnterpriseWorks Awarded University Center Grant For Downstate Illinois Entrepreneurial Development

Will Provide Direct Technical and Business Assistance For Entrepreneurs South of I-80

CHAMPAIGN,  Ill., February 1, 2017 – The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign’s EnterpriseWorks incubator has been awarded a University Center Grant from the U.S. Economic Development Administration’s (EDA) to provide direct assistance to downstate Illinois entrepreneurs. The EDA University Center Grant awards EnterpriseWorks $54,000 annually over five years for a total of $270,000. This is the second five-year University Center Grant EnterpriseWorks has been awarded by the EDA. 

EnterpriseWorks and the University of Illinois Urbana- Champaign are a part of a peer network of centers across the United States focused on utilizing the skills and talents from universities to provide business assistance to further grow the economy. The University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign was one of 24 colleges and universities recently awarded funding from the EDA University Center program, which also includes the University of Illinois at Chicago.

The University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign will utilize the grant funding to provide direct technical assistance to entrepreneurs and small businesses referred by partnering incubators, SBDC programs, PTAC offices, ITCs, University of Illinois Extension offices, or higher education entrepreneurial programs.  Eligible participants will be located in Illinois communities south of Interstate 80.

As part of the University Center program, technical and business assistance will be provided by teams of University of Illinois students who will engage in market research, competitive assessment, design, and technical consultation, among other activities.  This provides University of Illinois students with experiential learning opportunities to apply knowledge they have acquired in the classroom.

Preliminary work has begun on the project with efforts ramping up over the next several months. The University of Illinois has hired an experienced entrepreneur to lead the center along with the EnterpriseWorks team. EnterpriseWorks Receives EDA Grant To Further Entrepreneurship at Illinois Universities

Economic Adjustment Assistance Grant will support development of higher education entrepreneurial ecosystems across Illinois

CHAMPAIGN, IL, February, 1, 2017–The EnterpriseWorks incubator at the University of Illinois at Urbana- Champaign, has been awarded an Economic Adjustment Assistance Grant for $549,620 as a five year grant from the United States Economic Development Administration (EDA) to advance incubators and entrepreneurial ecosystems associated with higher education across Illinois. EnterpriseWorks will provide assistance to other higher education incubators and entrepreneurial spaces located across Illinois, including many in economically distressed counties. 

The grant will support the creation of the Illinois University Incubator Network (IUIN) to link such incubators and facilitate best practice and resource sharing, opportunities for workshops, as well as direct assistance to entrepreneurs.  Along with incubator assistance, the program will support an annual Illinois University Incubator Network conference to bring together industry thought leaders, entrepreneurs, faculty, investors, mentors, policymakers, and academic professionals to discuss the advantages and challenges faced across Illinois. IUIN also will build a mentor network for university incubator companies to capture the depth of knowledge that exists across the state.

“To harness and leverage the talent that exists in our entrepreneurial landscape, especially within University environments, will build the state’s economy and opportunities for future economic success,” said Laura Frerichs, director of the University of Illinois Research Park and director of economic development at the University of Illinois. “EnterpriseWorks is looking forward to working with supporting and advancing entrepreneurship across the state of Illinois.”

Supporting partners for the IUIN include Bradley University, Eastern Illinois University, Illinois Institute of Technology, Millikin University, Northern Illinois University, Olivet Nazarene University, Southern Illinois University, University of Illinois at Chicago, the University of Chicago, and Innovate Springfield.

Yahoo! Hadoop Product Engineering team is searching for Engineers to join Yahoo to help

build, update, maintain, and monitor our Hadoop open source systems (e.g. Hadoop

Core, Hbase, Storm, Oozie, etc.). These systems consists of tens of thousands of

computers, petabytesof data, spread across multiple datacenters.  If you are

RESPONSIBILITIES

    * Invent better ways to manage/automate the administration of new and existing

      clusters, via scripting and tools development

    * Consider, propose, and implement new methods for system deployment,

      monitoring, management and automation

    * Collaborate with cross-functional organizations (engineering, qa, site

      operations, and security) on new products/feature design and/or diagnosis

      of problems with the production systems

    * Real-time problem diagnosis/resolution on live systems

    * Monitor cluster health and performance, use critical thinking to find areas

      for improvement

    * Coordinate efforts with your peers in Bangalore

    * Document processes, grids, systems, and their associated configurations

    * Hardware and facility capacity planning, provisioning new resources

    * Implement and adhere to security policies and processes/controls

    * Participate in a group pager rotation for emergencies

 

REQUIREMENTS

    * Proven experience as a Unix systems engineer.

* Skilled in monitoring systems such as Nagios, Munin, Icinga, etc.

* Experience in using one or more configuration management systems (Chef/Puppet/Quattor)

    * Network skills in DNS, network stack, and subnets.

    * Experienced operating large installations of systems.

    * Strong shell scripting skills in one or more of Perl, Python, bash etc.

    * Experience designing large deployments integrating a variety of hardware

      and software technologies

    * Demonstrated team experience managing complex production server

      environments including direct administration of Unix systems

    * Strong interpersonal and communication skills; capable of explaining

      simple procedures in writing or verbally

    * Experience managing Apache Open Source projects Hadoop Core, Hbase, Storm, and Oozie

 

PREFERRED JOB QUALIFICATIONS

    * BS or MS in Computer Science (or equivalent)

    * Minimum 6 years experience as a Unix systems engineer / systems administrator with

      at least 2 years in an Internet related business

    * Experience with LDAP and Kerberos a plus

    * 2+ years experience operating large installations of systems

    * Knowledge and work experience with Java, Cluster computing platforms like Hadoop,

      Condor, Torque, Maui / Moab, Sun Grid Engine

About the Team

Yahoo is looking for engineers to join the Yahoo Hadoop team. The team has openings in Champaign IL. In this role you would be working on developing the next generation Big Data stack utilizing Hadoop for Batch, Storm for real time, and Spark for Iterative. Hadoop is the de-facto operating system for the worldwide cloud computing industry. Yahoo is the birthplace of Hadoop and has the largest Hadoop install in the world. The server count has grown from a few hundred nodes, to over 30,000 in the past few years. We have over 400,000 cores that process nearly 300PB of data spread over 25 clusters running a mix of Hadoop, Storm, and Spark.

About the Role

We are looking for experienced and motivated software engineers to help build a highly scalable and robust next generation Big Data stack to power Yahoo's data processing needs. The qualified engineer would work on one or more of the following open source projects: Hadoop Core (Common, Mapreduce, YARN, HDFS), Storm, or Spark.

If you have strong distributed systems background, love to solve complex and challenging problems, can work independently, and want to participate in some of the most exciting open source projects, we want to hear from you!. Qualifications

  • BS/MS in Computer Science (or equivalent)
  • Strong in Java or C++
  • Deep understanding of Algorithms, Data Structures, and Performance Optimization Techniques
  • Experience with one or more of the following: Hadoop Core, Pig, Hive, Hcat, Oozie, Hbase, Spark, or Storm
  • Experience with large distributed data and systems
  • Knowledge of machine learning techniques
  • Knowledge of database internals and query optimization
