Social Media Intern
Internship – 10 hours per week
Position Paid – Compensation is negotiable

Are you a matchmaker at heart; eager to go to the ends of the earth to help people reconnect with their soulmate?  If so, this available position to help create and direct the ongoing social media campaign for an online dating start-up will be as life-fulfilling as it is educationally-enriching.

FindMyLostLove.com is an attempt to establish a high-visibility brand targeting people who have met, felt that “spark”, and for one reason or another didn’t get a name or contact info.  It happens every day, all over the world, and stories are frequently told of the (sometimes crazy) efforts people make to meet that special person again.  There are currently thousands of picture/profile sites/apps, but all of them focus on the “next” match, rather than one that was made but ultimately missed.

You’ll be part of a growing team that thrives on creativity and innovation, so your input and contributions have the potential to have substantial impact on the product’s success.

Ideal candidates have experience managing a non-personal social media strategy, and are fluent in the management of, and purpose for, the mainstream social media sites as they relate to business.  Experience with online dating is not required, but an ability to adapt to the strategic approach necessary to be successful in this industry certainly is.

Responsibilities will include daily (M-F) monitoring of the web for online dating news/articles and relating relevant stories into a message that fits our social media strategy.  You’ll propose timeline posts for Facebook, as well as language for our Tweets.   Hours are flexible per your class schedule, and while you won’t be required to be in (the office) each day, we’ll likely target one day each week to review progress in person.

Please send an email to david@fmll.us with your resume and references for consideration.  We’re looking forward to hearing from you!

We're a fun group that feels more "Web 2.0" than "Big Company".  You can run Mac OS, Windows, or Linux with double monitors and your favorite ergo keyboard - we don't care, as long as it fits your style.  It's not surprising that we're voted one of the 2010 best places to work in the San Francisco Bay Area by the SF Business Times.

Location: Champaign, IL

You will:

* Develop, extend, execute, and analyze regression, functional, and performance test plans and automation for our virtualization components and products;

* Identify, setup, test, and troubleshoot permutations of software, hardware, and network configurations;

* Develop and extend scripts, programs, and other tools to implement test automation;

* Fluency in object-oriented Perl and shell command line;

* Familiarity with Linux/UNIX-based systems;

* Familiarity with networking (TCP/IP routing/switching, iOS/CatOS devices, WANs, iSCSI, etc.) and Wireshark.

EP Purification, a startup with lab and office space at EnterpriseWorks that is licensing technology out of the University of Illinois, was named a finalists in the fourth annual Clean Energy Challenge, a $500,000 business plan competition that takes place April 3 in Chicago. Independent evaluators with expertise in clean energy selected 10 early-stage companies, representing six states, to vie for the $100,000 Clean Energy Trust Prize for Early-stage Entrepreneurship. More information on the challenge and the other semifinalists is available at the Clean Energy Challenge website

EP Purification is devoted to the manufacturing of novel systems for the purification of water and air. Based on microplasma technology developed at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, EP Purification products offer improved efficiencies, which greatly reduce cost and weight. One of our products includes a line of ozone generators designed for the purification of water for municipal water supplies, commercial laundries, and pools. Tests show the reactor design to be at least as efficient as the best conventional systems available today but at least an order of magnitude lower in size and weight.

About the Position

We’re looking for impressive JavaScript developers who love crafting amazing user experiences. If you’re such a person, you probably have many options where you can apply your skill and passion, so why choose Turn?

We love JavaScript. We use Node and Bootstrap.  We manage our dependencies with Bower and NPM, build with Grunt, and leverage Angular and D3 on the front-end. You don’t need to know these applications to work with us (in fact, most of us didn’t use these a year ago). By being agile and free of bureaucracy, we use, learn, and change our libraries at our own discretion. We’re part of the open source community, our team recently open-sourced our distributed testing platform Thrill, and it’s underlying platform, Queen.

Our applications engineers work closely with the Product Management and User Experience teams to help design our products. We use agile methodologies with a focus on creating an exceptional customer experience.

We’re proud of the products we build. We not only impress our clients, but even the likes of the New York Times.

At Turn, what you build has impact on millions and works to better the Internet. You’ll do this in a culture that promotes innovation, freedom, growth, and humor. You’ll work with people who are as passionate about web applications as you are, along with leading experts in distributed computing, data mining, and machine learning who build our backend platform.

We are very passionate about what we do here, and at the same time have fun doing what we love.  Various company and team events and outings provide a good mix of work and play.  We all need to chill out every once in a while and have fun with our fellow team members.

  • Familiarity with Java, C#, or other object-oriented language
  • Strong problem solving skills
  • Excited by working in a fast-paced environment
  • 2 or more years of experience in a production-quality web development role
  • Degree in Computer Science a must have

Key Points

  • Working on high touch, high visibility, high performance, highly scalable enterprise applications - client facing apps involving campaign management, workflow, analytics, audience design, etc.
  • Experimenting with new ways of visualizing large amounts of data
  • Having a keen sense for visual design and information architecture
  • Work with latest technologies. Tech stack includes: Java, Hibernate, Spring 3, AngularJS, D3, JavaScript, Jasmine, Bootstrap, HTML5, MongoDB

Built in Chicago interviewed Research Park Director Laura Frerichs about how connecting the city's startup community with what's happening in tech and startups at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign will strongly benefit the statewide tech community, in an article published March 10.

Even though the university is two hours south of Chicago, Frerichs said she works to emphasize the importance of the innovation and the startup ecosystem in the city and in the whole region.

“There's an opportunity to see this as a collective benefit we have is a region,” she said. "That is more appealing than just one particular activity that may be happening in Chicago, but more of an explanation of why Illinois is relevant, why the Midwest is relevant.”
