Position Description:
The Part-Time Student Program at the AbbVie Innovation Center, located in the Research Park, is designed to augment AbbVie’s regular staff, and is for students who are able to work in parallel to their school schedule.

Core duties include:
• Responsible for creating training videos and presentations to explain the AbbVie IT SDLC in a manner that is easily understood by its audience.
• Create presentations and short (easy-to-follow) training videos (4 – 8 minutes in length).
• Collaborate closely with internal clients and stakeholders to help facilitate the creation of multimedia content
• Plan video shoots; scout, select and reserve shoot locations
• Develop production schedules and help manage video library
• Strong storytelling experience and attention to detail and exceptionally well organized
• Record and edit video and sound projects, including but not limited to: selecting program format for final output, capturing/importing media, organizing raw media, editing footage and sound files

Note: The goal of the effort is to showcase the processes in a captivating, creative, and effective manner.

Qualifications:
• Must be registered as a full-time student
• Must be able to commute to the work location on a daily basis
• Undergraduate and Graduate students
• Cumulative minimum GPA of 3.0/4.0, or equivalent
• Must be authorized to work in the US on a permanent basis without requiring sponsorship
• 10 - 15 hours/week during the academic year
• 35 - 40 hours/week during the summer semester
• Creative problem solver with ability to understand larger picture but who will focus on details
• Passion for design and great user experiences
• Familiarity with user research and usability testing methodologies to prioritize user needs to drive design priorities
• Ability to design and deliver clean and usable user interface prototypes for desktop

Preferred Skills:
• Willingness to learn policies and Processes
• Familiarity with hosting videos in Sharepoint

Position Description
The Part-Time Student Program at the AbbVie Innovation Center, located in the Research Park, is designed to augment AbbVie’s regular staff, and is for students who are able to work in parallel to their school schedule. Major duties include:
• Finding potential solutions for the AbbVie Library’s internal request tracking system, TRAX and helping in the testing/evaluation
• Supporting the AbbVie Library’s Information Search and Analysis (ISA) team by doing simple research work (creating search strategy hedges, simple searches, aid in the revision of more than 135 search strategies)

Qualifications

The Data Infrastructure Team at Turn is responsible for running very large Hadoop clusters, extremely fast changing RDBMS environments and different types of storage environments. This is an agile environment that provides opportunities to solve complex and scaling challenges.

 

Overview

 

As part of the Data Infrastructure Team, you will be an integral part of managing 24X7 Hadoop infrastructure. Currently this environment is at tens of petabytes in size. You will be contributing to improvements in architecture, performance, and optimization of Turn’s Hadoop ecosystem components. You’ll get the chance to take on complex and interesting problems as part of a fast-paced, highly-collaborative team.  We've built a complex analytics system around Hadoop for scalability and high availability. It's imperative that you approach administration with an emphasis on repeatability, testability, and consistency. The demands on our systems are increasing rapidly as we grow the userbase, as data ingestion grows, and as we add more functionality and products.

 

The successful candidate will be self-motivated with an attitude of getting things done, be able to see the big picture, and be able to deep-dive into details to solve complex problems.

 

Responsibilities

 

  • Contribute actively to improve Turn’s Hadoop ecosystem architecture.

  • Apply in-depth analysis of Hadoop performance, design solutions for issues, and evaluate each solution’s effectiveness.

  • Understand, develop, implement, and maintain operational best practices for smooth operation of large Hadoop clusters.

  • Design, develop and manage diagnostic & instrumentation tools for troubleshooting & in-depth analysis.

  • Optimize and tune the Hadoop environment to meet performance requirements.

  • Partner with Hadoop developers in establishing best practices for Warehouse and Analytics environments.

  • Investigate emerging technologies in Hadoop ecosystem that relate to our needs, and implement those technologies.

 

Required Skills

 

  • 3-5+ years plus of hands-on experience in deploying and administering Hadoop environments. Experience with multi-petabyte-scale Hadoop clusters is preferable.

  • Strong problem solving and troubleshooting skills.

  • Deep understanding of Hadoop design principles and the factors that affect distributed system performance.

  • Well versed in installing, administering, and managing Hadoop clusters running Cloudera, YARN, Spark, or similar technologies.

  • Sound understanding of products in the Hadoop ecosystem, such as HDFS, map-reduce, Spark, Storm, Pig, Oozie, Zookeeper, Cloudera manager, etc.

  • Good experience with scripting languages, such as Unix shell scripting languages, Python, Ruby, etc.

  • Good knowledge in implementing metrics collection for monitoring and alerting.

  • Hands on experience with automation tools like Puppet.

  • Good knowledge of Hadoop cluster connectivity and security.

  • BS/MS degree in computer science or related field.

 

Pluses

 

  • Linux administration and troubleshooting skills.

  • Good knowledge of common ETL packages/libraries and data ingestion.

  • Experience with RDBMS and NOSQL databases.

  • Experience with Java programming.

  • Knowledge of open source projects like Git, Nagios, TSDB, Docker and OpenStack.

Neil Hausmann, DuPont Pioneer

Neil Hausmann began his career at DuPont Pioneer in 2004 in Woodland, California, as part of Pioneer’s drought tolerance breeding efforts. Now residing in Iowa, Neil leads efforts to discover, validate and deploy advanced field sensing technologies for DuPont Pioneer.

Jim Mellon, Syngenta

As a University of Illinois graduate, Jim began a 6 year career in toxicology research at a CRO, and then moving into IT roles. Jim then worked at Syngenta and its legacy companies in 1987 with roles in R&D, E-commerce, and product development, and R&D IS. During this career Jim was responsible for many technology firsts in the company. Jim as named a Syngenta Science and Technology Fellow in 2006.

Bradley Uken serves as the Manager of the Champaign County Farm Bureau, a membership-based organization that provides information, education and advocacy for and on behalf of its members. Bradley
has been with the Farm Bureau for 17 years serving in two other counties previously in the same position. He was born and raised on a grain and livestock farm in Champaign County and continues to help out on the family farm as time allows. Bradley graduated from Illinois State University with an Agri-Business degree.

A University of Illinois graduate, Matt resides in Foosland, Illinois, with wife Angie and children, Alex and Brecke.

Pete Pistorius, Pistorius Farm

Pete Pistorius has been involved in the farming operation since graduating college in 1997. Pistorius Farms has been owned and operated in Central Illinois by his family for six generations. Pete’s duties include marketing, inputs, HR, crop planning and overall farm direction. Pete is also the President of Osbernville Grain Elevator and Meridian Seed Service.

Ken Dalenberg, Scattered Acres Farm

With a BS in Agronomy and MS in Crop Science, Ken has spent most of his farming career working with chemical and machinery companies in testing and evaluating new products. He has also tested and evaluated data analysis, precision farming, and modeling products. His farm, Scattered Acres, farms corn and soybeans in Champaign and Piatt counties in Illinois.

Edwin Moore Family Agriculture Innovation Prize

2017 Award: Soil Diagnostics Inc.

Edwin E. Moore (1924) graduated from the University of Illinois, College of Agriculture, and began farming in Will County. Throughout his agricultural career, he and wife, Iva, used innovative farming practices for both crop production and livestock management. Two of their four children became farmers, Edwin and Thomas (1953, College of Agriculture), and continued use of innovative farm practices. Subsequent generations of Edwin Moore's family have continued to pursue farming and ag related careers capturing the same innovative spirit. The Edwin Moore Ag Innovation Fund is being established to encourage startup companies engaged in development of new innovative technologies that may lead to increased productivity and/or efficiency in farming, or to create new agricultural opportunities, including new processes, new crops, and new food production systems.

Nick Nissing, The Climate Corporation

The Climate Corporation focuses on helping farmers sustainably increase their productivity through digital tools. Prior to his current role, Nick worked in a variety of roles at Monsanto. Nick is a registered patent agent with a B.S. in Chemical Engineering from Washington University in St. Louis, where he teaches as an adjunct faculty member.

William Schroeder, Archer Daniels Midland Company

Dr. Schroeder is responsible for Metabolic Engineering, Strain Development and Fermentation Process Development in support of ADM’s fermentation-based processes. Before joining ADM in 2011, he spent 12 years at Cargill Incorporated. Dr. Schroeder is the author or inventor of 16 publications and patents and has his Ph.D. in Bacteriology from the University of Wisconsin.

Kaustubh Bhalerao, Soil Diagnostics

Dr. Kaustubh Bhalerao is the CEO of Soil Diagnostics Inc. and an Associate Professor of Biological Engineering at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign with a program in Bioinstrumentation and Synthetic Biology. He brings extensive experience in automation, instrumentation, and the integration of hardware with Web technologies.

Kenneth Watkin, Lipotec Laboratories LLC

Kenneth L Watkin, PhD, is a biomedical engineer. He has been a faculty member at the University of Washington, University of Wisconsin, Madison, McGill University and the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign. At UIUC, he was a member of the Beckman Institute for Advanced Science and Technology. Dr Watkin is the founder of Lipotec Laboratories LLC. The focus of Lipotec is the advancement of biologic solutions for agriculture.

Al Eisaian, IntelinAir, Inc.

IntelinAir, Inc. is an Aerial Information Analytics company serving the agriculture industry. Previously, Al was the co-founder and CEO of IconApps, Inc. and Integrien Corporation and the Global Head of Product for Opera Solutions. Al has an M.B.A. from Pepperdine University and a BSEE from Oklahoma State University.

Lei Tian, Ag-Sensus

Ag-Sensus was founded to develop and commercialize the near-real-time remote sensing system for agriculture and unmanned aerial system precision farming data management technology developed by Dr. Lei Tian. UIUC is one of the world’s leading research institutions and Dr. Tian, President and CTO of Ag-Sensus,
is also the founding director of the Illinois Laboratory of Agricultural Remote Sensing and a recognized world leader in remote sensing for agricultural applications.

Lucas Frye of Amber Agriculture, a University of Illinois student startup with ties to EnterpriseWorks and the iVenture Accelerator, was awarded the Illinois Innovation Prize at the Entrepreneurship Forum by the Technology Innovation Center (TEC) in the College of Engineering.

The Illinois Innovation Prize honors a student who stands out as a passionate and creative innovator and entrepreneur, who is working with world-changing technology, and is seen as a role model to others. The University of Illinois is a world leader in research, innovationand leadership, and distinguishes itself by creating knowledge and preparing students for lives of impact while addressing critical societal needs through invention and entrepreneurship.

Lucas is the co-founder and CEO of Amber Agriculture, a startup that helps farmers monitor and manage the condition of their crops in storage through a system of wireless sensors communicating information connected to a phone app, so the farmers can capture the highest possible price per bushel. Lucas utilized his Bachelors of Science in Agricultural and Consumer Economics along with his co-founders engineering skills to win the 2016 Cozad New Venture Competition. Since then, Amber Agriculture has taken part in the iVenture Accelerator and was named the Best Startup at the Consumer Electronics Show by Engadget.

Cozad New Venture Competition Winners

Congratulations to the six official winners of the 2017 Cozad New Venture Competition. On the Non-University Resource Track, Trala took home the first place prize ($15,000), followed by Mesh++ for the second place prize ($10,000), and VR MD in third place ($1,000). On the Unviersity Resources Track, Automated Energy Systems won first prize ($10,000 and $5,000 for Best Energy Startup Award), Steady won second prize ($5,000), and PhantomCor took home third prize ($1,000). Many of these startups have used services provided by Research Park, such as iVenture Accelorator, EIRs, and participation in NSF I-Corps.

Automated Energy Systems won the I-Start prize, which awards a basket of first-year professional services through EnterpriseWorks at Research Park. More information on I-Start Professional Service Assistance could be found here. 

Automated Energy Systems, Mesh ++, inContAlert, and PhantomCor also won six months of lab space at the EnterpriseWorks Incubator.
