Autonomic Energy Systems is focused on longer-lasting mobile battery life

AES founders Nancy Sotto and Scott White

Autonomic Energy Systems (AES), a startup company coming to EnterpriseWorks, is using technology that has been discovered at the University of Illinois by founders, Nancy Sotto and Scott White, and their research team, to make phone and laptop batteries safer to use and last longer.

Sotto and White, both professors at the University, recognized the need for safer and longer lasting batteries. Batteries on mobile devices often see a decrease in battery life the older that they get. This means that a cellphone that is brand new could have a battery life of 7 hours, but an older cellphone could die after 3 or 4 hours.

Adding their self-healing technology to lithium batteries can be done through a "straightforward" surface treatment to the silicon nanoparticles. Sotto and White are hoping AES will commercialize this technology.

They join Xerion Advanced Battery Corp. in Research park in the effort to better batteries for the future.

This week, cofounder of Automated Energy Systems Anthony Griffin was interviewed for the Wired-In column on The News-Gazette. Coming to EnterpriseWorks, Autonomic Energy Systems prevents fires and extends the lifetime of li-ion batteries. The startup won first prize for Best Energy Startup Award at the 2017 Cozad New Venture Competition. They also won the I-Start prize, which awards a basket of first-year professional services through EnterpriseWorks at Research Park.

Anthony's role at Automated Energy Systems was inspired by fellow cofounder Scott White, who is also acts Anthony's academic adviser. After competing in the Cozad New Venture Competition, Anthony recognizes that, "It really helped us develop a sound business plan which complemented the technology, and forced us to think about the real challenges of taking tech from a lab and making in viable in high quantity commerical products."

I2RP Gives Way to Collaboration with Research Park Peers

12RP

On June 14, The Research Park at the University of Illinois had the opportunity to share their successes and innovations through the Association of University Research Parks program, Introduction to Research Parks (I2RP).

This event was the first of its kind and was a way for people across the country, and even as far as Canada, to bounce ideas off each other to promote even further growth. This is especially helpful to do with peers who already know how Research Parks work, and want other parks in the country to succeed.

Laura Bleill, the Associate Director of The Research Park, says "In some ways we're competitors so some of our universities, like Purdue and Iowa State and Nebraska, but in other ways, they're our collaborators. I don't think we would advance in our careers if we didn't have this network of our peers."

The Park is growing rapidly already and is 98% full, as twelve new companies were added in the past year alone. However, the demand for more space is still prevalent.

Laura says “We’re building buildings ‘cause frankly we have a demand that we can’t match right now. And that demand will be satisfied by those new buildings and that means more companies, more opportunities for job growth and creation and more opportunities for students.”
