ILLINOIS SBIR / STTR TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE PROGRAM REQUEST FOR CONSULTING PROPOSALS

The University of Illinois Research Park (UIRP LLC) and EnterpriseWorks Incubator at the University of Illinois are offering SBIR / STTR technical assistance and counseling services to technology startup businesses across Illinois. This program is supported through the Illinois University Incubator Network (IUIN) and EDA University Center. Both the IUIN and the EDA University Center are funded by the U.S. Economic Development Administration Economic Adjustment Assistance Program Illinois University Incubator Network (IUIN). The UIRP LLC and EnterpriseWorks Incubator are seeking consultants to provide SBIR / STTR assistance and training to Illinois small businesses and entrepreneurs primarily associated with universities across the state of Illinois.

Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) and Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) Programs

The Small Business Innovation Research (or SBIR) program is a United States Government program, coordinated by the Small Business Administration, intended to help certain small businesses conduct research and development (R&D). Funding takes the form of contracts or grants. The recipient projects must have the potential for commercialization and must meet specific U.S. Government R&D needs. The SBIR program was created to support scientific excellence and technological innovation through the investment of federal research funds in critical American priorities to build a strong national economy. Through FY2009, over 112,500 awards have been made totaling more than $26.9 billion. Funds are obtained by allocating a certain percentage of the total extramural (R&D) budgets of the 11 federal agencies with extramural research budgets in excess of $100 million. Approximately $2.5 billion is awarded through this program each year. The STTR program was established as a pilot program by the Small Business Technology Transfer Act of 1992, and partners small businesses with partnering research institutions for innovation product development. Government agencies with R&D budgets of $1 billion or more are required to set aside a portion of these funds to finance STTR activity. The programs include three phases. Phase I, the startup phase, makes awards for approximately 6 months support for exploration of the technical merit or feasibility of an idea or technology. Phase II awards grants are funded for 2 years in order to facilitate expansion of Phase I results. Research and development work is performed and the developer evaluates the potential for commercialization. Phase III is intended to be the time when innovation moves from the laboratory into the marketplace. No additional SBIR set-aside funds may be awarded for Phase III.

Monday July 17, 2017: PSYONIC launched a new Indiegogo Campaign plan to help fund their advanced Bionic Hand, affordable to everyone worldwide.

PSYONIC is a startup company at EnterpriseWorks whose mission is to deliver advanced, neurally-controlled prosthetic hands that are more advanced and more affordable than state-of-the-art prosthesis that are available on the market today. PSYONIC prothetic limbs are able to recognize different patterns of muscle activity from the user's residual limb, using machine learning algorithims. They are also the first company to develop commercially available prosthestics that are capable of sensory feedback.

They have the capabilities to change the lives of those who have lost limbs due to injury or disease, and help them regain their touch back, along with a sense of normalcy in their lives, while costing less than a tenth in raw materials compared to state-of-the-art commercially available hands.

Their goal is to reach $250,000 in one month.
