Graduate Hourly, John Deere, Champaign
 
This position is for up to 20 hours per week, increasing to up to 40 hours in the summer, to start immediately.
Support engineers at John Deere Technology Innovation Center in the Champaign Research Park (south end of campus) by researching companies, technology, and business issues. As a member of the Partnering for Innovation team, your research will guide the decision making of engineers worldwide, finding companies, professors, and universities to work with in jointly developing new technologies, finding patent out-licensing opportunities, and identifying new suppliers. Every research project completed has real-world implications within the company, providing actual research experience in a corporate environment.
 
Requirements:
An interest in business or technology research (or both), competitive intelligence, intellectual property issues, or data mining
Ability to quickly learn about business or technology subjects that you are unfamiliar with, and apply that knowledge to research problems
Strong oral and written skills, including presentation skills
MS Office software, including PowerPoint
Although not required, it is helpful to have one or more of the following:
 
Relevant coursework, such as:
o GSLIS:
  • Searching Online Information Systems
  • Government Information
  • Business Information
  • Legal Resources
  • Applied Business Research
  • Business & Government
  • Information Consulting
o Any classes in the MS Tech curriculum
o Applicable classes in Agricultural Economics
  • A professional or academic background in business
  • A professional or academic background in technology
  • Experience with patent searching and intellectual property issues
  • Experience using business databases (OneSource / Avention, LexisNexis, ABI/Inform, etc.)
  • Experience using science and technology databases (Engineering Village, ASABE, IEEE, etc.)
  • Government regulatory research experience
  • A second language, especially Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Russian, Portuguese, or German
  • Knowledge of farming, agricultural issues, construction equipment, or other off-highway equipment
  • Familiarity with internationally accepted technology standards (IEEE, ISO, ANSI, etc.)
