Innovation Lab Intern

Status: Undergraduate or Graduate Hourly

Hours per week: 15-20 academic year; 40 in summer

Qualifications

  • Current UIUC graduate or undergraduate student with a major or emphasis in Computer Science, Electrical/Computer Engineering, Industrial/Systems Engineering, or related field
  • 3.0/4.0 minimum cumulative grade point average
  • Self-motivated with a high level of learning agility
  • Excellent interpersonal, teamwork, and problem-solving skills
  • Coursework or experience in circuit theory, analog and digital circuits

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Support and participate in technical electrical engineering activities.
  • Responsible for completion of assigned task on time and meeting technical requirements.
  • Work to conceptualize systems and electrical designs.
  • Perform both system-level and component-level design and integration tasks involving electrical and electro-mechanical component-level tasks which include determining block diagrams, detailed design, simulation, debug and test.
  • Perform the design, development, modification, analysis, and documentation of electrical systems.
  • Troubleshoot and diagnose malfunctions in existing products or systems and design corrective modifications as needed.
  • Provide progress status for electrical design assignments periodically.
  • Participate in resolution of technical issues within the company and outside suppliers.
  • Communicate clearly (written and oral) with other company personnel and the customers as required.
  • Conduct root-cause failure analyses of electrical components.
  • Ability to work independently with little supervision from others.
  • May participate in preparation of less complex proposals.
  • Attend and participate in appropriate customer or business meetings.

Desired Skills and Knowledge

  • Experience with IoT concepts and real-time prototype development of IoT applications.
  • Experience with reading and understanding commercial electrical drawings.
  • Experience with Mentor Graphics or Altium schematic capture tools.
  • Experience with conducting root-cause failure analyses.
  • Experience developing custom fixtures for test, evaluation and manufacturing of electrical equipment.
  • Experience with either system-level or component-level design and test on electrical systems.
  • Experience with specifying and evaluating supplier components, subsystems and services.
