Corteva Agriscience™, Agriculture Division of DowDuPont™ is seeking a Research Leader - Remote Sensing Data Science for its Center located at University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) Research Park. The incumbent will join our global Data Science and Informatics group working on predictive analytics for digital agriculture.
 
At Corteva Agriscience™, you’ll become part of an interdisciplinary, global work environment in which you will operate as a science leader who will encourage and promote disruptive advances by applying state-of-the-art methods in sensor-fusion, data science, and artificial intelligence to mine critical problems spanning multiple segments of the organization. Your strong and extensive background in remote-sensing fundamentals, machine/deep learning, statistics and optimization will enable us to gain insights from a wide array of structured and unstructured datasets consisting of global-scale spatio-temporal sources (farm-equipment, UAV, satellite, weather, soils etc.), proximal sensors and IoT streams. This is a critical position with strategic impact on our business and you will play a major role by driving innovation in agriculture technology.
 
Working closely with researchers across the organization, UIUC interns and faculty, you will lead development and deployment of sophisticated end-to-end solutions on a wide range of problems in digital agriculture. This will require excellent interpersonal communication skills and an aptitude for building networks, within and outside the company.
 
Key Job responsibilities include:
  • Conduct exploratory research (aligned with business objectives) and establish a center of excellence (with focus on sensor-fusion data-science) at the research park, with a mix of university and internal researchers.
  • Hire and mentor interns in relevant disciplines.
  • Develop relationships with professors from relevant departments for innovation, collaboration and/or consulting.
  • Develop and maintain excellent relationship with all students and help in driving student engagement and performance
  • Establish relationship with other research park companies to enable innovation and possible collaborations

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:
  • A PhD in Computer Science, Earth/Environmental Sciences, Physics, Statistics, Mathematics or related areas.
  • Strong understanding of remote sensing fundamentals, computational learning theory, statistical methods & optimization.
  • Experience in the evaluating and optimizing machine-learning algorithms and/or process-based models, towards understanding crop-physiology, crop-productivity & environment-characteristics at scale.
  • Experience in dealing with large scale spatio-temporal data (satellites, drones, IoT-devices, weather-networks, ground-rovers etc.), preferably on a cloud or high-performance computing environment.
  • Programming skills in Python, R and C/C++ with the ability to quickly create prototype solutions on Unix / Linux / Cloud platforms using open source tooling and libraries as necessary.
  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal and communication skills and a can-do attitude with the ability to thrive in a fast-paced dynamic environment.
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to work as part of a global team.
  • Strong networking skills is a must as this position involves establishing, nurturing and expanding relationships with UIUC faculty, companies located in the Research Park area, and Corteva Agriscience™ scientists.
  • Candidate should possess excellent communication skills
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Ability and aptitude to oversee/assist general administration of the site
  • Demonstrated expertise in establishing strategic research collaborations
  • Good track record of research documentation and IP capture (publications/patents).
