Description:
Welcome to the P&G Smart Lab. This is where “what if” meets reality. We’re building an inspiring space for explorers, thinkers and makers where we can work together to improve the future of home life around the world.

Procter & Gamble is best known by our different brands. It’s likely you’ve used a few of our brands already today – Swiffer, Old Spice, Tampax, Always, Olay, Charmin, Bounty, Gillette, Tide, Gain, Cascade, Pepto Bismol, Dayquil, among many others. We impact about 5 billion – yes, you read that right – lives on a regular basis.

Just because we have a lot of big-name brands doesn’t mean we think we know everything. Honestly, there is still a lot to be learned about consumer behaviors and practices. And this is where you come in.

We are building a place where we can ask some pretty interesting questions about consumer behaviors, habits, and practices. Our work in the Smart Lab is breaking boundaries in the consumer behavior space. We’re using sensors and smart devices to study what people actually do. Think about it – would you remember how many sheets of toilet paper you used last Thursday? Most people wouldn’t. That’s why we’re doing things a little differently.

Ultimately, we want to impact and improve people’s lives. And what better way than by understanding what they do and how they act?

As a student at the P&G Smart Lab, your time will be divided into two parts – 70% of your weekly time will be driving core business work. We have some pretty interesting projects that we will be working on. The other 30% of your time will be your own. We expect you to spend this time learning, exploring, ideating, innovating, and working on projects that YOU think will be good for us to do.
We’re building a team – this isn’t just a solo gig. Sure, we all appreciate our deep focus work time, and we’ll make sure you can have that time. But we also collaborate and need to be good at communicating well with each other.

Electrical Engineering Student
We’re looking for an ECE student to lead the work with our smart device design, prototyping, repairs, and management. This is not some theoretical thought experiment. We’re breaking things apart and building new measurement tools. You’ll have to do a little bit of everything – from prototyping new devices to fixing and repairing our existing devices. We have some fun toys in our lab, so if you’re interested in playing – let us know!

You will be a pretty good fit for this job if you have the following skills and abilities:
  • You’re comfortable soldering components
  • You know what a PCB is, and you’re not scared to design one (2-layer or 4-layer) – this will include a functional knowledge of C or C++
  • You have the background in Applied Math – at least enough to be able to process load calculations, solve voltage divider equations, etc.
  • Know Ohms law and understand the use of basic components: resistors, capacitors, inductors, transformers, relays, diodes, etc.
  • You understand filters, both passive and active, including poles and zeroes
  • You have a strong attention to detail and you’re pretty organized
  • You know what you know and you know what you don’t – you’re not afraid to ask for questions if you don’t know something, and you will take the lead when you do know something
  • You can think outside the box when it comes to electrical components and pieces – you’re not afraid to experiment, but you also know how to put things together
  • You can test a new board or circuit without it going up in smoke
  • You can build a functioning prototype with both analog and/or digital sensors – this will include writing the code to be able to interpret the raw telemetry in a meaningful way
