Summary

Common Ground Publishing, an academic publisher, based in Champaign, seeks a Community Editor in its Publishing Department. This is a position that will provide editorial and administrative support within the Publishing Department. The Community Editor will primarily assist with journal production, handling submitted articles at every stage of the publication process.  Proficiency in Spanish desirable but not essential.

Job Title: Community Editor
Duration: Continuous
Hours: 40/week

Requirements:

  • Experience with copy-editing/proofreading
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Knowledge of Chicago Manual of Style
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Ability to focus simultaneously on short- and long-term projects
  • Familiar with Microsoft Office Suite; comprehensive knowledge of Word
  • Constantly operates a computer
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, use hands to finger, and talk or hear.
  • Interest in academic publishing

Responsibilities:

  • Guide journal articles through the various production phases, including quality editorial checks, peer review, typesetting, and online/print publication
  • Create and publish journal issues in electronic and print formats
  • Correspond with academics and other publishing professionals
  • Verify correct use of Chicago Manual of Style in academic articles
  • Assign peer referees to journal submissions
  • Use Microsoft Word and Adobe Acrobat Pro to create and edit typeset proofs
  • Other tasks as assigned by the Director of Publishing
