The News-Gazette sits down with Manfredo Suefferheld, the founder of EnterpriseWorks and I-Start Accelerator startup FrostDefense Envirotech, to discuss how the company plans to solve reduction issues in grape and stone fruit production.

FrostDefense Envirotech joined EnterpriseWorks through the I-Start Accelerator Program, and has also received dunding from the NSF through the I-Corps program.

    Mammoth Trading

EnterpriseWorks and I-Start Accelerator graduate Mammoth Trading sits down with Venture Well to discuss the significance of the NSF I-Corps program. CEO Richael Young reflects on the company’s time in the I-Corps program while working at Research Park, emphasizing that I-Corps has taught the team that, “we had to spend more time thinking about customer pain points, legal frameworks, and regulations much more than algorithms and web interfaces.”

I-Corps national faculty member and Expert-in-Residence Jed Taylor now sits on the advisory board of Mammoth Trading, in which he states, “Mammoth Trading is a good example of a startup that went out there and identified a problem that needed to be solved and used innovation and entrepreneurship to fix it. That’s a good reminder for future innovators. Don’t fall in love with your invention. That may blind you to actually solving the problem or creating a sustainable business.”

Mammoth Trading is now located in Denver Colorado. For the full story, click here.

    Innovation at Research Park

Read the full story on Fox Illinois.

The award-winning Research Park is largely the reason, sited by Reuters, that the University of Illinois was ranked the 25th most innovative university in the world out of 100. Rueters classified the University as an educational institution contributing to "advancing science, starting new markets and inventing new technologies."

The Research Park really began to flourish in the past ten years, after blossoming in 1999. Today, the park consists of 17 buildings with 100 leading companies and employs over 2,000 employees.

"Innovation is in this community's DNA," associate director of the park, Laura Bleill said. "It's really part of whom we are and what we do and why we've been so successful as an institution and as a community."

The Research Park is really known for student innovation, stemming directly from the University. "It provides opportunities for students to use their skills to develop and apply the ones they're using in a classroom in an environment where those skills are needed and wanted and valued" Bleill said.

This can be seen in EnterpriseWorks, the park's start-up incubator. Lifefoundry, Inc., is using robotic tools to apply automation skills in an effort to reduce human error in science labs.

Photonicare, Inc., another EnterpriseWorks startup, is working on a device that helps physicians quickly and accurately diagnose middle ear infections.

These are just a few of the innovations stemming from the park. "It's really about a continuum so from that first kernel of an idea all the way into making that first sale" Bleill said. "Research Park is for aspiring entrepreneurs to really stir the pot of what their ideas and dreams could be, but it's also a place where businesses can launch and thrive in the early stages."

    Lena Head

Read the full interview on the News-Gazette.

Lena Head, site director at the AGCO Innovation Center, is the latest Research Park affiliate to be featured on Wired In for making a difference in the tech community of Champaign-Urbana.

AGCO recently opened a satellite office to team with the University for high-tech agriculture research.

Lena Head comes from the area, staying close to her family's farm and earning her bachelors and MBA from the University of Illinois.

When asked about AGCO and her role, Lena said "At the Acceleration Center, we are developing new technologies to increase our capabilitites as an agriculture equipment manufacturer, but always exploring new ways to incorporate technology into our products to help growers be more efficient in their farming operations. My role as site director is to identify key buisness needs to bring to the Acceleration Center to solve, guide and manage students who are helping to solve these needs and stay engaged in the University and start up community on innovations and research pipelines.
