PygHack 2017, Sept. 22-23
The Pygmalion Music & Tech is excited to launch PygHack, a hackathon event for tech professionals and students. The event will include a 24 hour hack to invent solutions to help the local community with innovative new technology. UIRP To Host AURP’s First Introduction to Research Parks Program
The University of Illinois Research Park will be the first stop of the Introduction to Research Parks program put on by The Association of University Research Parks, and the guest list includes research park professionals from across the country. Those who attend the Introduction to Research Parks at The University of Illinois Research Park will learn the how’s and why’s that led to the park’s successful and growing public-private partnership. Established in 1986, The Association of University Research Parks serves more than 700 research parks across the world in order to foster innovation, commercialization and economic growth in a global economy through university, industry and government partnerships.

The Research Park is pleased to be part of this initiative by the University YMCA, one of six being established this year through the national YMCA, as part of our efforts to be an inclusive, supportive community. The YMCA’s New American Welcome Centers (NAWC) are designed to help immigrants—also referred to as newcomers—fully integrate into American society and prepare receiving communities to be welcoming and inclusive. NAWCs accomplish this through a combination of integration services, collaborations with community leaders and businesses, and strategies to connect and build cross-cultural understanding between immigrants and U.S.-born residents. Intern Professional Development Workshop Series Begins June 6
This summer, all Research Park interns are encouraged to attend our Intern Professional Development Workshop Series. These will take place every Tuesday from June 6-July 25 in the EnterpriseWorks Atrium from 12-1PM. There will be no workshop on Tuesday, July 4. This year, food will only be served from 12-12:15PM, followed by a 40 minute presentation, giving interns ample time to return to their offices by 1PM. Topics will cover a range of themes, such as collaboration, skill translation, branding, networking, resumes, stress management, and finance. C-U Hack Night at EnterpriseWorks in June and July
The new community group CU HackNight will meet in the EnterpriseWorks atrium every Tuesday evening from 6 – 8 pm in June and July (no meeting July 4). CU Hack Night is a weekly, ongoing meetup of diverse people from our local community. Their focus is problem solving, using the group’s collective skills. Most of their work is computer-based, but it doesn’t have to be limited to technology. Dinner is part of the meeting. Graybar and University of Illinois Announce the Opening of the Graybar Innovation Lab at Research Park
Graybar and the University of Illinois announced the grand opening of the Graybar Innovation Lab at Research Park on May 1. At this facility, Graybar will collaborate with University of Illinois students and faculty to develop industry-leading digital capabilities that strengthen its position in the supply chain. Electroninks Incorporated Launches Kickstarter Campaign
EnterpriseWorks graduate Electroninks Inc. has launched a new
Kickstarter campaign to raise money to create Circuit Scribe: DIY Electronic Kits. They have created DIY kits that incoprorate their paper-based electronics such as Circuit Scribe, a conductive ink pen that allows electricity to flow through the ink on the pages. These kits are a fun new way to use their products, and allows people to get creative, while also educating people about basic circuitry principles.
AARP Tech Nest Intern Highlighted in the News-Gazette
Rishabh Anand, rising sophomore in electrical engineering, discussed his vision to bring the Internet of Things to the Champaign-Urbana community in this week’s Wired In column. Rishabh’s drive for technological innovation has led him to a summer internship at AARP’s Tech Nest as a Voice Enabled Technology Development Intern, located in Research Park. He has also participated in the the Cozad New Venture Competition, as well as started his own registered student organization called the Illini Internet of Things Association. Rishabh explains that through these initiatives, “He hopes to make Champaign-Urbana a Smart City.” Read the full

Launch of Illinois Data Science Initiative (iDSI)
We are pleased to announce that the campus is undertaking a new effort – the Illinois Data Science Initiative (iDSI) – to explore how to better connect our faculty, staff, and students from nearly every discipline across the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign to the Data Science skills, tools, and practitioners that they need to solve their problems. In its first year, iDSI is focusing on identifying challenges, opportunities, and potential collaborations through a series of campus-wide summits centered on core research themes. This work is intended to form the basis for a sustained effort serving the data science needs of the Illinois research community and its educational, governmental, and industrial partners. InnovateHER provides an opportunity for entrepreneurs throughout the U.S. to showcase products and services that have a measurable impact on the lives of women and families (30%), have the potential for commercialization (40%), and fill a need in the marketplace (30%). Over the course of the 2016
InnovateHER Challenge, over 248 organizations registered to host local competitions. Businesses in 49 of 50 states, plus Puerto Rico and American Samoa were represented. There were 194 local competitions held in which winning business plans were submitted to SBA for evaluation.
