Chinmay Soman of EarthSense Featured on The News-Gazette

EarthSense CEO and co-founder Chinmay Soman was featured on The News-Gazette's Wired-In column on May 21. EarthSense is an EnterpriseWorks affiliate that provides management advice for farmers, ranchers, and other land managers based on valuable on-site data gathered with highest efficiency and modeled with leading machine learning techniques. The EnterpriseWorks Affiliate Program is a pre-incubation program designed to help inventors and entrepreneurs to access services through EnterpriseWorks and become tenants of the Research Park through an affordable program.

EarthSense is currently developing software and robots that allows farmers and agronomists to easily see what is happening on their farms. Chinmay explains that, "The long-term vision at EarthSense is that we'll have UAVs and robots on the ground as well; this team of small and affordable robots will work together on the farm the entire season."

At COUNTRY Financial, the COUNTRY Digital Lab Site Leader will lead a team of student interns and technology professionals in support of our mobile technology and other innovation initiatives. This role will be responsible for recruiting, supporting, and growing project and support teams to meet needs of our internal and external partners, including planning and organization of service delivery. This person in this position will have the opportunity to play a critical role in the formation of the COUNTRY Digital Lab organization and rollout. This role will also represent COUNTRY Financial at the University of Illinois and build relationships throughout the Research Park to foster community and knowledge sharing.

 

Responsibilities:

  • Collaborates with business and/or ITS partners to execute Digital Strategy initiatives, starting with mobile development efforts.
  • Manages and develops intern teams. This includes, but is not limited to: coordinating the work activities of the team; overseeing day-to-day work execution and functional area processes; setting specific measurable objectives related to corporate vision and strategies; supporting and communicating corporate objectives to employees; monitoring employee progress and providing feedback on an ongoing basis.
  • Oversees projects. This includes, but is not limited to: ensuring project and support efforts meet business and ITS objectives; ensuring agile project efforts are completed on time, within budget and with high quality; recommending and promoting implementation of new tools/techniques and product releases; participating in developing technical/application strategies and architectures; and managing project scope, requirements, resources, risks, timeline and budget.
  • Champion the Digital Lab internally and within the University of Illinois Research Park.
  • Fosters the highest level of commitment among our people through transparent communication about business challenges, successes and results.
  • Creates an environment which encourages people to think, behave, take action and control work and make decisions autonomously to attain clear goals.
  • Takes personal responsibility for making tough decisions, meeting commitments and ensuring expected results are achieved
     

 

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor degree in Information Systems, Computer Science or equivalent discipline. 
  • At least 5 years of directly-related work experience. 
  • Possesses current knowledge of information technology concepts including application development, hardware platforms, operating systems, technical services, security, etc. 
  • Demonstrates the ability and willingness to: 
    - Actively solicit and encourage innovation, process improvement, and varying points of view. 
    - Delegate effectively to maximize employee involvement and efficiency. 
    - Makes sound decisions, including allocating decisions to the appropriate employee level where work is known and solutions can best be identified. 
    - Create an empowering and enriching work environment for maximum performance and results. 
    - Proactively seek out cost containment opportunities through one’s own efforts and those of others. 
    - Stay self-directed and focused on activities and outcomes. 
    - Coach employees towards improved performance, engagement and overall development. 
  • Ability to form effective partnerships with all levels of management and University staff.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Possesses knowledge of mobile application development technologies and standards. 
  • Possesses experience in Agile methodology, preferably mobile app development.
  • Exhibits ability to lead, facilitate and build teams, and establish a high level of staff accountability. 
  • Skilled at championing improvement efforts, and influencing progress towards positive results. 
  • Adept at using structure to manage versus control and uses a supportive management style with open/direct communication.

SNOOZ creates consumer electronics focused on bedrooom use. Their current product creates a soothing air sound using a real fan blade.

Inventor of Snooz, Eli Lazar graduated from the University of Illinois with a degree in mechanical engineering. Since the creation of Snooz, his startup has surpassed their Kickstarter goal and now has angel investors.

Role Summary/Purpose:

 

The Manager of Synchrony Financial Innovation Center at UIUC will be responsible for driving innovation at Synchrony by focusing on emerging technologies, artificial intelligence, and machine learning efforts through student intern teams, faculty relationships, and adopting best practices from other companies that have shown success in innovation.

 

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Engage with the Research Park to manage daily operations of the research facility

Qualifications/Requirements:

  • Bachelor's Degree and 2 years of IT experience developing and implementing information systems and project management experience

UIRP To Host AURP’s First Introduction to Research Parks Program
The University of Illinois Research Park will be the first stop of the Introduction to Research Parks program put on by The Association of University Research Parks, and the guest list includes research park professionals from across the country. Those who attend the Introduction to Research Parks at The University of Illinois Research Park will learn the how’s and why’s that led to the park’s successful and growing public-private partnership. Established in 1986, The Association of University Research Parks serves more than 700 research parks across the world in order to foster innovation, commercialization and economic growth in a global economy through university, industry and government partnerships. Attendees will attend various sessions and courses throughout the two-day event, as well as tour The Research Park and EnterpriseWorks technology incubator. Research Park Part of New Americans Welcome Center Advisory Committee
The Research Park is pleased to be part of this initiative by the University YMCA, one of six being established this year through the national YMCA, as part of our efforts to be an inclusive, supportive community. The YMCA’s New American Welcome Centers (NAWC) are designed to help immigrants—also referred to as newcomers—fully integrate into American society and prepare receiving communities to be welcoming and inclusive. NAWCs accomplish this through a combination of integration services, collaborations with community leaders and businesses, and strategies to connect and build cross-cultural understanding between immigrants and U.S.-born residents. Intern Professional Development Workshop Series Begins June 6
This summer, all Research Park interns are encouraged to attend our Intern Professional Development Workshop Series. These will take place every Tuesday from June 6-July 25 in the EnterpriseWorks Atrium from 12-1PM. There will be no workshop on Tuesday, July 4. This year, food will only be served from 12-12:15PM, followed by a 40 minute presentation, giving interns ample time to return to their offices by 1PM. Topics will cover a range of themes, such as collaboration, skill translation, branding, networking, resumes, stress management, and finance. C-U Hack Night at EnterpriseWorks in June and July
The new community group CU HackNight will meet in the EnterpriseWorks atrium every Tuesday evening from 6 – 8 pm in June and July (no meeting July 4). CU Hack Night is a weekly, ongoing meetup of diverse people from our local community. Their focus is problem solving, using the group’s collective skills. Most of their work is computer-based, but it doesn’t have to be limited to technology. Dinner is part of the meeting. It’s worth emphasizing that C-U Hack Night is not a competitive contest (or “hackathon”). All are welcome. More information about the group here: https://cuhacknight.org/

Graybar and University of Illinois Announce the Opening of the Graybar Innovation Lab at Research Park
Graybar and the University of Illinois announced the grand opening of the Graybar Innovation Lab at Research Park on May 1. At this facility, Graybar will collaborate with University of Illinois students and faculty to develop industry-leading digital capabilities that strengthen its position in the supply chain. Electroninks Incorporated Launches Kickstarter Campaign
EnterpriseWorks graduate Electroninks Inc. has launched a new Kickstarter campaign  to raise money to create Circuit Scribe: DIY Electronic Kits. They have created DIY kits that incoprorate their paper-based electronics such as Circuit Scribe, a conductive ink pen that allows electricity to flow through the ink on the pages. These kits are a fun new way to use their products, and allows people to get creative, while also educating people about basic circuitry principles. 
AARP Tech Nest Intern Highlighted in the News-Gazette
Rishabh Anand, rising sophomore in electrical engineering, discussed his vision to bring the Internet of Things to the Champaign-Urbana community in this week’s Wired In column. Rishabh’s drive for technological innovation has led him to a summer internship at AARP’s Tech Nest as a Voice Enabled Technology Development Intern, located in Research Park. He has also participated in the the Cozad New Venture Competition, as well as started his own registered student organization called the Illini Internet of Things Association. Rishabh explains that through these initiatives, “He hopes to make Champaign-Urbana a Smart City.” Read the full story

Reconstruct CEO Featured on Engineering at Illinois Podcast
Reconstruct CEO Mani Golpavar Fard was featured on the Engineering at Illinois podcast to discuss how their technology is revolutionizing construction monitorizing. Reconstruct is currently located at EnterpriseWorks and was a 2017 Entrepreneurial Excellence: New Venture Award Finalist at the Innovation Celebration. Reconstruct uses images of job sites to measure work completed, find plan deviations, and predict risk for delay. Launch of Illinois Data Science Initiative (iDSI)
We are pleased to announce that the campus is undertaking a new effort – the Illinois Data Science Initiative (iDSI) – to explore how to better connect our faculty, staff, and students from nearly every discipline across the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign to the Data Science skills, tools, and practitioners that they need to solve their problems. In its first year, iDSI is focusing on identifying challenges, opportunities, and potential collaborations through a series of campus-wide summits centered on core research themes. This work is intended to form the basis for a sustained effort serving the data science needs of the Illinois research community and its educational, governmental, and industrial partners. InnovateHER provides an opportunity for entrepreneurs throughout the U.S. to showcase products and services that have a measurable impact on the lives of women and families (30%), have the potential for commercialization (40%), and fill a need in the marketplace (30%). Over the course of the 2016 InnovateHER Challenge, over 248 organizations registered to host local competitions. Businesses in 49 of 50 states, plus Puerto Rico and American Samoa were represented. There were 194 local competitions held in which winning business plans were submitted to SBA for evaluation. Position Summary:

We are seeking a University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) student to support an Abbott Nutrition Research and Development (ANRD) team in conducting a literature search on malnutrition during infancy and toddlerhood. This student will summarize their findings in a literature review or PowerPoint Slide Deck and Presentation.

The Student Will Be Responsible For:

• Performing a literature search

• Analyzing and summarizing scientific literature

• Creation of a Literature Review or PowerPoint slide deck

• Communicating findings to team

Qualifications:

• Must be enrolled as a student at UIUC

• Experience utilizing online search tools such as PubMed, Google Scholar, etc. required

• Experience critically assessing nutrition, molecular biology, and microbiome literature preferred

• Effective communicator and excellent verbal/written English language skills

• Self-motivated problem solver who can succeed as an individual or member of a team
